Ecobee Thermostat Troubleshooting
Ecobee thermostats connect via WiFi and support HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home. They're known for their room sensors that improve comfort.
Won't Connect to WiFi
Initial Setup
- Power on the thermostat (must be wired first)
- Follow on-screen prompts to select your WiFi network
- Enter your WiFi password
- Create an Ecobee account when prompted
Connection Issues
- Ecobee supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks
- Check WiFi signal strength in Menu > Settings > WiFi
- Restart your router if other devices are having issues
- Reset network settings: Menu > Settings > Reset > Reset WiFi
Thermostat Won't Turn On
Power Issues
- Check that HVAC breaker is on
- Verify wiring matches the Ecobee wiring diagram
- A C (common) wire is required - use the included PEK if you don't have one
- Check for blown fuse in HVAC system
PEK (Power Extender Kit)
If your system lacks a C wire:
- Install the PEK at your furnace/air handler
- Follow Ecobee's PEK installation guide carefully
- PEK provides power through existing wires
Temperature Inaccurate
- Ecobee uses the built-in sensor by default
- Add SmartSensors for more accurate readings (they average)
- Keep thermostat away from direct sunlight or drafts
- Calibrate in Menu > Settings > Installation > Temperature Correction
SmartSensor Issues
Sensor Not Pairing
- Pull the battery tab or reinsert battery
- On thermostat: Menu > Sensors > Add Sensor
- Hold sensor near thermostat during pairing
- Sensor LED will blink green when paired
Sensor Shows Offline
- Check battery level (CR2032)
- Move sensor closer to thermostat (range ~45 feet)
- Remove and re-pair the sensor if persistent
HVAC Not Responding
- Check system settings match your equipment
- Run equipment test: Menu > Settings > Installation > Equipment > Test
- Verify wiring if specific functions don't work (heat, cool, fan)
- Check if a safety switch has tripped (condensate pan, etc.)
