Before You Begin
The Google Pixel Tablet with Charging Speaker Dock transforms from a portable Android tablet into a smart home display when placed on its magnetic dock. In docked mode, it functions like a Nest Hub — providing Google Assistant access, smart home controls, and a digital photo frame. Undocked, it works as a full-featured Android tablet for apps, browsing, and entertainment.
What You Will Need
- Google Pixel Tablet
- Charging Speaker Dock (included with the bundle)
- The included USB-C power cable and adapter for the dock
- A Google account
- A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
- A flat surface for the dock — kitchen counter, nightstand, or desk
Step 1: Set Up the Charging Speaker Dock
- Place the Charging Speaker Dock on a flat, stable surface near a power outlet.
- Connect the USB-C power cable to the back of the dock and plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
- The dock's LED indicator will light up to confirm it is receiving power.
- Position the dock where the tablet's screen will be easily visible and the speaker will provide good sound coverage for the room.
Step 2: Power On the Pixel Tablet
- Press and hold the power button on the top edge of the Pixel Tablet until the screen lights up.
- If the battery is depleted, place the tablet on the dock first to charge. The magnets will align the tablet automatically, and charging begins immediately upon docking.
- Allow the tablet to reach at least 15 percent charge before starting setup if the battery is very low.
Step 3: Complete Android Setup
- Follow the standard Android setup prompts on screen — select your language, region, and connect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in with your Google account. This links the tablet to your Google services, apps, and smart home devices.
- If you have another Android device, you can transfer settings, apps, and data during setup using the Quick Switch option.
- Accept privacy settings and terms of service as prompted.
- Set up screen lock security (PIN, pattern, or fingerprint using the built-in fingerprint sensor on the power button).
Step 4: Configure Hub Mode
- Place the Pixel Tablet onto the Charging Speaker Dock. The magnets will snap it into position.
- When docked for the first time, the tablet will prompt you to set up Hub Mode.
- Choose what the screen displays while docked — Google Photos albums as a digital photo frame, curated art, a clock, or weather information.
- If using Google Photos, select specific albums or people to display.
- Hub Mode activates automatically whenever the tablet is placed on the dock, turning it into a smart home display similar to a Nest Hub.
Step 5: Set Up Google Assistant and Smart Home Controls
- During setup or afterward, configure Google Assistant by saying "Hey Google" and following the voice training prompts.
- Open the Google Home app on the tablet. All smart home devices linked to your Google account will appear automatically.
- While docked, you can control smart home devices directly from the Hub Mode interface by swiping to the smart home control panel.
- Use voice commands like "Hey Google, turn off the lights" or "Hey Google, show me the front door camera" while the tablet is docked or undocked.
- The dock's built-in speaker provides better audio quality than the tablet alone, making it ideal for music, calls, and Assistant responses.
Step 6: Install Apps and Configure Entertainment
- Open the Google Play Store and install your preferred streaming apps — Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify, and others.
- The Pixel Tablet supports Chromecast built-in, so you can cast content from your phone to the tablet while it is docked.
- When undocked, the tablet functions as a standard Android tablet for browsing, email, games, and productivity apps.
- Download the apps you use most frequently for offline access when away from the dock.
Tips for Best Performance
- The dock charges the tablet and simultaneously acts as a speaker, so leaving the tablet docked when not in use keeps it charged and ready.
- Customize Hub Mode's screensaver settings in Settings > Hub Mode to adjust photo display speed, clock style, and ambient information.
- The Pixel Tablet supports up to two user profiles, allowing different household members to have personalized experiences when undocked.
- When docked, the tablet automatically routes audio through the dock's higher-quality speaker. When undocked, audio plays through the tablet's built-in speakers.
- Use the Quick Settings panel (swipe down from the top) to toggle Do Not Disturb, adjust brightness, or switch between accounts quickly.
