What's in the Box
Your LIFX A19 Smart Bulb comes with the bulb and a quick-start card. This is LIFX's standard A19-format smart bulb with a standard E26 screw-in base, offering bright white light with tunable color temperature. It connects directly to your WiFi network without requiring a hub or bridge, making it one of the simplest smart bulbs to set up. The A19 shape fits into virtually any standard lamp, ceiling fixture, or pendant light in your home.
Prerequisites
You'll need a light fixture with a standard E26 socket and a light switch that can remain in the ON position permanently. When the switch is off, the bulb loses power and goes offline, meaning it can't respond to app or voice commands. Your home WiFi must broadcast on the 2.4GHz frequency band since LIFX bulbs don't connect to 5GHz networks. If your router uses a combined dual-band SSID, you may need to create a separate 2.4GHz network name in your router settings. Download the LIFX app on your iOS or Android device and create an account before starting setup.
Step-by-Step Setup
- Turn off the light switch for the fixture where you'll install the bulb.
- Screw the LIFX A19 into the E26 socket. Ensure it's seated securely without forcing or overtightening.
- Turn the light switch on. The bulb will power up and enter pairing mode, indicated by a pulsing or steady glow.
- Open the LIFX app and tap "Add Device" or the "+" icon in the top corner.
- The app will scan for new LIFX bulbs. When your A19 appears, select it from the discovered devices list.
- Enter your 2.4GHz WiFi network name and password when prompted. The bulb connects directly to your router without needing any intermediate hardware.
- Give the bulb a meaningful name based on its location, such as "Office Desk Lamp" or "Living Room Floor Lamp." Assign it to a room or group for easier organization.
- Test the bulb by adjusting brightness and white temperature through the app. Slide between warm 2700K for a cozy feel and cool daylight 6500K for task lighting.
White Temperature and Scheduling
The LIFX A19 Smart Bulb lets you fine-tune the white temperature to suit different activities and times of day. Use warmer tones around 2700K to 3000K for relaxing in the evening, and cooler temperatures near 5000K to 6500K for reading, cooking, or working. The LIFX app's Day and Dusk feature automates this by gradually shifting the white temperature throughout the day to align with natural light patterns. You can also set on and off schedules tied to specific times or sunrise and sunset, eliminating the need for manual control or physical timers.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The LIFX A19 works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit straight out of the box. Link your LIFX cloud account in your preferred voice assistant's app to enable hands-free control. Say "Hey Google, dim the office light to 40 percent" or "Alexa, turn off the living room." For Apple HomeKit, the LIFX app will guide you through adding the bulb to your Home app during initial setup. LIFX also integrates with IFTTT and SmartThings for more advanced automations. Group multiple bulbs in the same room within the LIFX app so they can be controlled as a unit through voice commands or scenes.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the bulb doesn't appear during setup, verify your phone is connected to the same 2.4GHz network the bulb will join. Reset the bulb to pairing mode by toggling the light switch off and on five times, pausing about one second between each toggle. The bulb will flash to confirm the reset. If the bulb connects but intermittently goes offline, check your router's WiFi signal strength at the fixture's location and your router's maximum connected device limit. Each LIFX bulb takes one IP address on your network. For ongoing reliability, keep the LIFX app and bulb firmware updated through the app's device settings page.
