What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue White and Color A21 Smart Bulb (100W equivalent)
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A light fixture with a standard E26 socket rated for 100W or higher
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • A Wi-Fi connection on the same network as your Hue Bridge

What Makes the A21 Different from the A19

The Hue A21 is the high-output version of the standard Hue Color bulb. While the A19 produces 800 lumens (equivalent to a 60W incandescent), the A21 produces 1600 lumens, equivalent to a 100W incandescent. This makes it suitable for spaces where you need brighter illumination, such as kitchens, large living rooms, workshops, and overhead fixtures. The A21 bulb is slightly larger than the A19, so verify that your fixture can accommodate the larger form factor.

Step 1: Check Your Fixture Compatibility

Before installing, confirm that your light fixture can accommodate the A21 bulb. The A21 form factor is wider and slightly taller than a standard A19 bulb. Check that:

  • The fixture has a standard E26 screw-in socket.
  • The globe, shade, or enclosure has enough internal space for the larger bulb.
  • The fixture is rated for at least 100W (or equivalent wattage). While the LED bulb only draws about 15W, the fixture labeling ensures adequate ventilation.

Step 2: Install the Bulb

  1. Turn off the light fixture at the wall switch.
  2. Remove the existing bulb.
  3. Screw in the Hue A21 bulb gently until snug.
  4. Turn the wall switch back on.

The bulb will light up at full brightness with a warm white glow, demonstrating its noticeably brighter output compared to the standard A19.

Step 3: Add the Bulb to Your Bridge

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light and let the app search.
  3. When the A21 appears, tap to pair it.
  4. Assign it to the appropriate room.

Step 4: Explore Brightness and Color Controls

The A21 offers the same full-spectrum controls as the A19 but with significantly more light output:

  • Brightness: Dimmable from 1% to 100%. At full brightness, 1600 lumens is bright enough to serve as the primary light source in most rooms.
  • Color temperature: Adjustable from 2000K warm candlelight to 6500K cool daylight.
  • Full color: Access over 16 million colors from the color wheel for mood and accent lighting.
  • Scenes: Apply preset or custom scenes. At higher brightness levels, scenes appear more vivid and impactful.

Step 5: Use the A21 for Task Lighting

The higher output of the A21 makes it excellent for task-oriented areas where the A19 might feel insufficient:

  • Kitchen overhead: Use cool white (4000-5000K) at full brightness for food preparation and cooking.
  • Home office: Set to neutral white (4000K) at 80-100% brightness for productive, focused lighting.
  • Living room: In large fixtures, the A21 provides enough light to fill the room at comfortable levels even at 50-60% brightness.
  • Garage or workshop: Full brightness with cool white for practical illumination of work areas.

Step 6: Set Up Automations

Create automations in the Hue app to adjust the A21's brightness and color temperature throughout the day. Use bright, cool tones during morning and afternoon hours, then automatically transition to warm, dimmer settings in the evening. The higher lumen output means even at reduced brightness, the A21 provides more light than a standard A19 at the same percentage.

Tips

  • The A21 draws approximately 15W of power while producing 1600 lumens, making it highly energy-efficient compared to a 100W incandescent.
  • Leave the wall switch in the on position at all times. Use the Hue app, voice assistants, or Hue switches for daily control.
  • When displaying saturated colors like deep red or blue, the effective brightness will be lower than when displaying white. This is normal for all RGB LED bulbs.
  • If the A21 feels too bright at full power, the Hue app's dimming controls give you smooth, flicker-free adjustment all the way down to 1%.
  • The A21 supports Matter through the Hue Bridge and works with Hue Entertainment for screen-synced effects.
  • If you are replacing multiple standard A19 bulbs in a multi-bulb fixture, a single A21 in a single-bulb fixture can often match the total output.
