What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue White and Color Starter Kit (includes Hue Bridge and bulbs)
  • An Ethernet cable (included with the Bridge)
  • A Wi-Fi router with an available Ethernet port
  • A compatible light fixture with an E26 socket
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection

Step 1: Connect the Hue Bridge

The Hue Bridge is the central hub that communicates with all of your Hue smart bulbs over Zigbee. Start by plugging the included Ethernet cable into the back of the Bridge and connecting the other end to an available port on your Wi-Fi router. Then plug the Bridge's power adapter into a wall outlet. Wait approximately one minute until all four LED indicators on the top of the Bridge light up solid blue, which confirms that the Bridge is powered on and connected to your network.

Step 2: Install the Bulbs

Turn off the light fixture at the wall switch. Remove the existing bulb and screw in one of the Philips Hue White and Color bulbs from the starter kit. Turn the wall switch back on. The bulb should illuminate with a warm white light, confirming that it has power. Repeat this process for each bulb included in the kit.

Step 3: Download and Open the Hue App

Download the Philips Hue app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Open the app and tap Get Started. The app will search for your Hue Bridge on the local network. Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the router your Bridge is plugged into.

Step 4: Pair the Bridge

When the app detects the Bridge, it will prompt you to press the large circular button on top of the Bridge. Walk over to the Bridge and press the button. The app will connect to the Bridge and automatically discover the bulbs that came with your starter kit. This pairing process typically takes less than 30 seconds.

Step 5: Assign Bulbs to Rooms

After pairing, the app will ask you to create rooms. Tap Create Room, choose a room type such as Living Room or Bedroom, and assign each bulb to the appropriate room. Naming your rooms clearly makes voice control with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri much easier later on.

Step 6: Test Your Lights

Navigate to the Home tab in the Hue app and tap on a room. You should see controls for each bulb. Try the following to confirm everything is working:

  1. Tap the power icon to turn the light on and off.
  2. Use the brightness slider to dim and brighten the bulb.
  3. Tap the color picker to cycle through the full spectrum of 16 million colors.
  4. Select a preset scene like "Energize" or "Relax" to see curated color and brightness combinations.

Step 7: Set Up Voice Control (Optional)

If you use a voice assistant, link your Hue account for hands-free control:

  • Amazon Alexa: Open the Alexa app, go to Skills, search for Philips Hue, and enable it. Discover devices to sync your lights.
  • Google Home: Open the Google Home app, tap the plus icon, select "Set up device," then "Works with Google," and search for Philips Hue.
  • Apple HomeKit: In the Hue app, go to Settings, then HomeKit & Matter, and follow the prompts to add the Bridge to your Apple Home.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Starter Kit

  • Always leave the wall switch in the on position. Hue bulbs need constant power to stay connected to the Bridge. Use the app or a Hue Switch to control them instead.
  • Keep the Hue Bridge within range of your router and centrally located relative to your bulbs for the best Zigbee signal.
  • Explore the Automations tab in the Hue app to schedule lights to turn on at sunset or wake you up gradually in the morning.
  • Update the Bridge firmware regularly through the app to access new features and security patches.
