What You Will Need
- Amazon Echo Hub
- Smartphone with the Alexa app installed
- Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz or 5GHz)
- Power adapter with installation kit (included)
- An Amazon account
- A drill, level, Phillips screwdriver, and wire strippers (for wall mounting)
- Optionally, a compatible in-wall junction box for hardwired power
Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Location
The Echo Hub is an 8-inch wall-mounted smart home control panel designed to replace a light switch or be surface-mounted on any wall.
- Select a central, high-traffic location such as a hallway, kitchen entrance, or near your main entry door. This ensures easy access and strong Wi-Fi coverage.
- Mount at a comfortable height, typically 48 to 54 inches from the floor, so all household members can reach the touchscreen.
- Ensure the location is within range of your Wi-Fi router and any smart home devices you plan to control.
Step 2: Mount the Echo Hub
You can power the Echo Hub two ways: with the included power adapter (surface mount) or by wiring it to an existing in-wall junction box.
Option A: Surface Mount with Power Adapter
- Hold the included wall plate against the wall and use a level to ensure it is straight. Mark the screw hole positions with a pencil.
- Drill pilot holes and insert the included wall anchors if mounting on drywall.
- Screw the wall plate to the wall.
- Route the power adapter cable behind or along the wall to the nearest outlet. Use the included cable management clips for a clean look.
- Snap the Echo Hub onto the wall plate. It will click into place magnetically.
Option B: In-Wall Junction Box
- Turn off power to the junction box at the circuit breaker.
- Remove the existing switch or cover plate.
- Connect the Echo Hub's power wires to the junction box wires following the included wiring diagram. The Echo Hub requires a neutral wire.
- Secure the wall plate to the junction box with the included screws.
- Snap the Echo Hub onto the wall plate and restore power at the breaker.
Step 3: Power On and Initial Setup
- Once mounted and powered, the Echo Hub screen will light up and display the setup wizard.
- Select your language.
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network. The Echo Hub supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and also includes Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy for direct smart home device connections.
- Sign in to your Amazon account.
- Confirm your time zone and address.
Step 4: Set Up Your Smart Home Dashboard
- After setup, the Echo Hub displays a customizable smart home dashboard showing your connected devices organized by room.
- Tap Manage Dashboard or long-press on the home screen to enter edit mode.
- Add device tiles for your most-used devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, and cameras. Tiles show real-time status and allow one-tap control.
- Organize devices into rooms and groups by going to the Alexa app and selecting Devices > Rooms & Groups.
Step 5: Connect Smart Home Devices
The Echo Hub acts as a central control panel and supports multiple smart home protocols.
- For Matter and Thread devices, put the device in pairing mode and the Echo Hub will discover it automatically via its built-in Thread border router.
- For Zigbee devices, note that the Echo Hub does not include a Zigbee radio. You will need a separate Zigbee hub or an Echo device with Zigbee support.
- For Wi-Fi smart devices, add them through the Alexa app under Devices > + > Add Device and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- For Bluetooth devices, go to Settings > Bluetooth on the Echo Hub to pair.
Step 6: Create Routines and Scenes
- Open the Alexa app and go to More > Routines.
- Create routines like "Good Morning" that adjust the thermostat, turn on lights, and display your calendar when you tap a button on the Echo Hub dashboard.
- Add routine shortcuts as tiles on the dashboard for quick one-tap activation.
Tips
- The Echo Hub does not have a built-in speaker. Pair it with a nearby Echo speaker in the Alexa app to hear Alexa responses and announcements.
- Use the infrared motion sensor to trigger routines when someone walks by, such as turning on hallway lights automatically.
- Enable Do Not Disturb on a schedule so the screen dims at night without turning off completely.
- The Echo Hub supports Matter, making it compatible with devices from Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings ecosystems.
