What You Will Need
- Arlo Essential Indoor Camera
- USB power cable and adapter (included)
- Smartphone with the Arlo app installed
- 2.4 GHz WiFi network
Step 1: Choose a Location
The Arlo Essential Indoor Camera is designed for monitoring the inside of your home. Place it on a flat surface such as a shelf, table, or countertop with a clear line of sight to the area you want to watch. The camera has a wide 130-degree field of view, so a corner placement can cover an entire room. Ensure the location is within range of your WiFi router for a reliable connection.
Step 2: Plug In the Camera
Connect the included USB power cable to the back of the camera and plug the other end into the wall adapter. Unlike outdoor Arlo cameras, the Essential Indoor Camera requires continuous power and does not use a battery. The LED on the front of the camera will begin blinking, indicating it is ready for setup.
Step 3: Download the Arlo App
If you have not already, download the Arlo Secure App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Create a new Arlo account or sign in to your existing one. The Essential Indoor Camera connects directly to your WiFi network and does not require a SmartHub or base station.
Step 4: Add the Camera to Your Account
- Open the Arlo app and tap Add New Device.
- Select Cameras, then choose Arlo Essential Indoor Camera.
- Scan the QR code located on the bottom of the camera.
- When prompted, select your 2.4 GHz WiFi network and enter your password. Note that this camera does not support 5 GHz networks.
- Hold your phone close to the camera so it can read the connection tone. The camera will connect to your network within one to two minutes.
A solid blue LED confirms the camera is connected and online.
Step 5: Configure the Privacy Shield
One of the standout features of the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera is its integrated privacy shield. This physical cover slides over the lens to ensure the camera is not recording when you are home. In the Arlo app, go to the camera settings and configure the privacy shield to activate automatically based on your location using the geofencing feature, or control it manually from the app.
Step 6: Adjust Detection and Notification Settings
- In the Arlo app, tap on your camera and go to Settings.
- Adjust the motion sensitivity slider to reduce false alerts from pets or moving curtains.
- Set up activity zones to focus detection on specific areas, such as doorways or windows.
- Enable or disable audio detection if you want alerts for loud sounds like smoke alarms or glass breaking.
Step 7: Set Up Automations
The Arlo app lets you create automated routines. For example, you can set the camera to arm automatically when you leave home and disarm when you return. Navigate to Modes in the app to configure armed, disarmed, and standby behavior for your camera.
Tips for Best Performance
- Place the camera at table height or slightly above for the best facial recognition angle.
- Avoid placing it directly opposite a window, as bright backlight can reduce image clarity.
- Use the built-in two-way audio to communicate with family members or pets while you are away.
- Keep the camera firmware updated through the Arlo app for improved performance and security.
