What You Will Need

  • Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera
  • Rechargeable battery (included)
  • Magnetic mount and screws
  • Smartphone with the Arlo app installed
  • 2.4 GHz WiFi network
  • Drill and drill bits (for permanent mounting)

Step 1: Charge the Battery

Remove the battery from the camera housing and connect it to the included USB charging cable. The LED on the battery turns solid green when fully charged, which usually takes about five hours for the first charge. Ensure the battery is completely charged before beginning the installation for the best initial experience.

Step 2: Download and Open the Arlo App

Install the Arlo Secure App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Create an Arlo account or sign in if you already have one. The Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera connects directly to your WiFi network without requiring a SmartHub or base station, keeping the setup simple and affordable.

Step 3: Add the Camera to Your Account

  1. Open the Arlo app and tap Add New Device.
  2. Select Cameras, then choose Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera.
  3. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the camera or on the packaging.
  4. When prompted, select your 2.4 GHz WiFi network and enter the password. This camera does not support 5 GHz networks.
  5. Hold your phone near the camera to transmit the connection information. The app uses an audio signal for pairing.
  6. Wait for the LED to blink blue and then turn solid blue, confirming a successful connection.

Step 4: Choose a Mounting Location

The Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera is weather-resistant and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Pick a spot that gives a clear view of the area you want to monitor, such as the front door, back patio, or garage. Mount it seven to ten feet above the ground for the best angle. The integrated spotlight is most effective when the camera faces a walkway or entry point, illuminating visitors or intruders at night.

Step 5: Install the Camera Mount

  1. Hold the mount plate against the surface and mark the screw holes.
  2. Drill pilot holes if mounting on hard surfaces like brick, stucco, or concrete.
  3. Secure the mount plate with the included screws and wall anchors.
  4. Snap the camera onto the magnetic mount and adjust the angle.

Step 6: Verify the Camera View

Open the Arlo app and check the live view to confirm the camera is aimed correctly. The Essential Spotlight Camera provides a 130-degree field of view with 1080p video. Make small adjustments to the camera position on its magnetic mount until you are satisfied with the coverage area.

Step 7: Configure Spotlight and Detection Settings

  1. In the Arlo app, go to the camera Settings.
  2. Enable the spotlight to activate automatically when motion is detected at night.
  3. Adjust motion sensitivity to balance between catching important events and reducing false notifications.
  4. Set up activity zones to define specific areas where motion should trigger alerts.
  5. Configure notification preferences for push alerts, email alerts, or both.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Position the camera within 50 feet of your WiFi router for a stable connection. If signal strength is weak, consider a WiFi range extender.
  • Reduce motion sensitivity and use activity zones to extend battery life significantly.
  • The built-in two-way audio lets you speak to visitors or warn off intruders directly from the app.
  • Consider the Arlo Solar Panel accessory to keep the camera charged continuously without manual intervention.
