What You Will Need

  • Arlo Ultra 2 camera
  • Arlo SmartHub (included with the Ultra 2 system)
  • Rechargeable battery (included)
  • Magnetic mount and screws
  • Ethernet cable (included)
  • Smartphone with the Arlo app installed
  • 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi network
  • Drill and drill bits (for permanent mounting)

Step 1: Charge the Battery

The Arlo Ultra 2 ships with a rechargeable battery that needs a full charge before use. Connect the battery to the magnetic charging cable and wait for the LED to show solid green, indicating a complete charge. This takes approximately three to four hours. The Ultra 2's 4K recording uses more power than lower-resolution cameras, so starting with a full charge is important.

Step 2: Set Up the Arlo SmartHub

The Ultra 2 requires an Arlo SmartHub for optimal performance. The SmartHub provides a dedicated wireless connection to the camera, reducing strain on your home WiFi.

  1. Connect the SmartHub to your router using the included Ethernet cable.
  2. Plug the SmartHub into a power outlet.
  3. Wait for the front LED to turn solid green, indicating it is connected and online. This may take one to two minutes.

Step 3: Download the Arlo App and Add the SmartHub

  1. Download the Arlo Secure App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Create a new account or sign in to your existing Arlo account.
  3. Tap Add New Device and select SmartHub.
  4. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the SmartHub or enter its serial number.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete SmartHub registration.

Step 4: Add the Ultra 2 Camera

  1. In the Arlo app, tap Add New Device and select Cameras.
  2. Choose Arlo Ultra 2 from the device list.
  3. Insert the charged battery into the camera.
  4. Scan the QR code on the camera when prompted.
  5. The app will pair the camera with your SmartHub. Wait for the camera LED to turn solid blue.

The SmartHub communicates with the camera on a dedicated frequency, so you do not need to select a WiFi network for the camera itself.

Step 5: Choose a Mounting Location

The Arlo Ultra 2 records in 4K HDR with a 180-degree diagonal field of view, making it excellent for covering large outdoor areas. Mount it at a height of eight to ten feet, angled slightly downward. Common locations include the front porch, garage, driveway, or backyard. Make sure the SmartHub is within range, typically up to 300 feet with a clear line of sight.

Step 6: Mount the Camera

  1. Position the magnetic mount plate on the wall and mark the screw holes.
  2. Drill pilot holes and use wall anchors if necessary.
  3. Secure the mount plate with screws.
  4. Attach the camera to the magnetic mount and adjust the angle using the live view in the Arlo app.

Step 7: Configure Camera Settings

Navigate to the camera settings in the Arlo app to fine-tune your setup. Enable auto-zoom and tracking to have the camera digitally follow moving subjects within its field of view. Set up activity zones, adjust spotlight brightness, and configure motion sensitivity. With an Arlo Secure subscription, you can enable AI-powered detection for people, vehicles, animals, and packages.

Tips for Best Performance

  • The 4K resolution provides exceptional detail but uses more bandwidth. Ensure your SmartHub has a strong Ethernet connection to your router.
  • Use the Arlo Solar Panel for continuous power if the camera is in a sunny location.
  • The Ultra 2 has a built-in siren that can be triggered manually from the app or automatically when motion is detected.
  • For local storage backup, insert a microSD card into the SmartHub.
