What's in the Box
The Enbrighten Add-On Smart Outlet package includes the in-wall add-on outlet and a wall plate with installation instructions. This is an add-on device, meaning it does not function on its own — it must be paired with a GE Enbrighten master smart switch, dimmer, or outlet in a multi-location wiring configuration. The add-on communicates with the master device through a physical traveler wire, not wirelessly, providing seamless control from a secondary location.
Prerequisites
- A GE Enbrighten master device (Z-Wave or Zigbee smart switch, dimmer, or outlet) already installed and working
- A multi-pole wiring configuration (3-way or 4-way) with a traveler wire running between switch locations
- A neutral wire in the add-on outlet box
- Basic electrical tools: screwdriver, wire stripper, non-contact voltage tester, and wire nuts
- Comfort with basic electrical wiring, or a licensed electrician to assist
Important Compatibility Note
The Enbrighten Add-On Smart Outlet only works with GE Enbrighten master devices. It is not compatible with standard 3-way switches or smart switches from other manufacturers. The traveler wire carries a low-voltage communication signal, not line voltage, so mixing brands can cause malfunctions or damage.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off the breaker. Shut off the circuit breaker that controls the outlet circuit. Use a non-contact voltage tester at the secondary switch box to confirm there is no power.
- Remove the existing switch. Take off the old wall plate and unscrew the switch from the box. Disconnect all wires and identify the traveler wire, neutral wire, and ground wire.
- Connect the add-on outlet. Attach the traveler wire to the Traveler terminal on the add-on device. Connect the white neutral wire to the Neutral terminal. Fasten the ground wire to the Ground screw. The add-on outlet does not use a line or load connection at this location.
- Mount the add-on. Push the wires into the electrical box, screw the add-on device into place, and attach the wall plate.
- Restore power. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The add-on outlet should immediately communicate with the master device.
- Test the setup. Press the paddle on the add-on outlet to control the connected load. Verify that both the master device and the add-on control the same outlet or light fixture correctly from their respective locations.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Since the add-on communicates through the master device, all smart home control, automation, and voice commands go through the master's Z-Wave or Zigbee connection. You don't need to pair the add-on with your hub — it's automatically included when the master device is paired. Any schedules, scenes, or routines you set up for the master device will also respond to the add-on's physical controls.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the add-on doesn't control the fixture, verify the traveler wire is connected at both the add-on location and the master device location. A loose traveler connection is the most common issue. If the add-on seems unresponsive, check that the neutral wire is properly connected — the device needs neutral to power its internal circuit. If you replaced a traditional 3-way switch, make sure the old traveler wire is the one connected, not the old line or load wire that may have been at that box.
