What You Will Need
- Eve Water Guard Leak Sensor
- Sensing cable (included, approximately 6.5 feet / 2 meters)
- Power adapter and cable (included)
- iPhone or iPad with the Eve app installed
- Apple Home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) for remote notifications
Step 1: Choose a Location
Place the Eve Water Guard in an area where water leaks are most likely to occur. Common locations include:
- Under the kitchen sink — to detect plumbing leaks or garbage disposal failures
- Near the water heater — to catch slow leaks or tank failures early
- Behind the washing machine — to detect hose leaks or overflow
- In the basement — to catch seepage or flooding
- Under bathroom vanities — to detect pipe or faucet leaks
The base unit should be placed on a dry, flat surface near the area you want to monitor.
Step 2: Connect the Sensing Cable
The Eve Water Guard uses a sensing cable that detects water along its entire length, not just at a single point. Plug the sensing cable into the port on the base unit. Lay the cable flat along the floor in the area where water is most likely to collect. You can loop it around the base of a water heater, along the edge of a washing machine, or across the floor near pipes. The cable can detect even a small amount of water anywhere along its length.
Step 3: Connect to Power
Plug the included power adapter into a wall outlet and connect the cable to the Eve Water Guard. The device requires continuous power to monitor for leaks. It does not have a battery backup, so ensure the outlet is on a circuit that is not frequently switched off. When power is connected, the LED on the device will briefly illuminate.
Step 4: Download the Eve App and Add the Device
- Install the Eve app from the Apple App Store.
- Open the app and tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the HomeKit setup code on the bottom of the Eve Water Guard or on the included card.
- The app will connect to the device via Bluetooth.
- Assign the sensor to a room, such as "Basement" or "Laundry Room."
- Give it a name like "Water Heater Leak Sensor."
Step 5: Configure Alert Settings
The Eve Water Guard has a built-in 100-decibel siren that sounds when water is detected. In the Eve app, you can configure the following:
- Siren volume — adjust or mute the audible alarm
- Notifications — enable push notifications to your iPhone for immediate alerts, even when you are away from home (requires an Apple Home hub)
For remote notifications to work, make sure you have an Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad set up as a home hub in the Apple Home app.
Step 6: Test the Sensor
- Place a few drops of water on the sensing cable.
- Within seconds, the siren should sound and a notification should appear on your phone.
- Dry the cable completely with a towel after testing.
- The alert will clear automatically once the cable is dry.
Testing ensures the cable is properly connected and the notification system is working before you rely on it for real leak detection.
Step 7: Set Up Automations (Optional)
You can create HomeKit automations that trigger when the Eve Water Guard detects a leak. For example:
- Turn on smart lights to alert household members visually.
- Trigger a smart valve to shut off the main water supply if you have a HomeKit-compatible water valve controller.
- Send a message to family members via shared Home notifications.
Create these automations in the Eve app or Apple Home app under the Automations tab.
Tips for Best Performance
- Check the sensing cable periodically to make sure it has not shifted or become covered by items stored nearby.
- The cable is designed to lay flat. Do not bend it sharply or wrap it tightly, as this can reduce sensitivity.
- If the Eve Water Guard supports Thread, pair it with a Thread border router like a HomePod Mini for faster, more reliable communication.
- Extension sensing cables may be available from Eve for covering larger areas.
