What's in the Box
Your GE CYNC Smart Plug package includes the compact smart plug and a quick start guide. This plug-in device inserts into any standard indoor wall outlet and connects to your 2.4GHz WiFi network without the need for a separate hub, bridge, or gateway. Its compact design minimizes blockage of the second outlet in a duplex receptacle, so you can stack two plugs or leave the adjacent socket free for other devices.
Before You Begin
- Download the Cync app (formerly C by GE) on your iOS or Android device
- Create a Cync account or log into an existing one
- Confirm your WiFi router broadcasts a 2.4GHz network — this plug does not support 5GHz
- Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone for the initial pairing process
- Keep your WiFi password accessible
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug it in. Insert the GE CYNC Smart Plug into any indoor wall outlet. The LED indicator on the plug should start blinking, indicating it's ready for pairing.
- Open the Cync app. Tap the + icon to add a new device. Select Indoor Plug from the device category. The app will use Bluetooth to scan for nearby Cync devices.
- Connect to WiFi. Choose your 2.4GHz WiFi network when prompted and enter the password. The app sends the credentials to the plug over Bluetooth.
- Wait for confirmation. The plug will join your WiFi network and the LED will stop blinking, turning solid. This typically takes about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Name and assign a room. Give the plug a clear name such as "Desk Lamp" or "Bedroom Fan" and assign it to a room in the app for organized control.
- Test the plug. Toggle it on and off from the Cync app. Plug a lamp or small appliance into the smart plug and verify it responds correctly to app commands.
Smart Home Integration
The GE CYNC Smart Plug works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa out of the box. Link your Cync account in the Google Home or Alexa app to use voice commands like "Alexa, turn off the desk lamp" or "Hey Google, turn on the bedroom fan." You can include the plug in Alexa routines or Google Home automations to coordinate it with other smart devices in your home.
Scheduling and Everyday Use
The Cync app includes a built-in scheduler that lets you set daily or weekly on/off times for the plug. Use it to automate a coffee maker each morning, turn on a lamp at sunset, or run a humidifier during sleeping hours. You can also group multiple CYNC Smart Plugs to control them simultaneously — turn off all plugs in the living room with one tap or voice command. The away mode randomly toggles the plug on and off to simulate someone being home while you're traveling.
Energy Management
While the CYNC Smart Plug doesn't have built-in energy monitoring, using scheduled on/off times ensures your devices aren't drawing standby power around the clock. Pairing the smart plug with high-draw devices like space heaters or window AC units adds a safety layer, since you can ensure they're turned off when not needed or set a maximum runtime through scheduled automations.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the plug's LED doesn't blink when first inserted, unplug it for 10 seconds and try again. To force a factory reset, press and hold the button on the plug for about 10 seconds until the LED rapidly blinks. If the Cync app can't find the plug, make sure Bluetooth is on and you're standing within a few feet of the device. Verify your phone is on a 2.4GHz WiFi network — if your router uses a combined network name for both bands, try temporarily disabling the 5GHz band during setup. If the plug disconnects frequently after setup, check that your router firmware is up to date and that the plug isn't at the very edge of your WiFi range.
