What's in the Box

Your Honeywell HCM350 Smart Cool Mist Humidifier includes the humidifier base unit, a water tank, a wicking filter, and a user manual. This evaporative humidifier uses a germ-killing UV technology to treat water before it's released as a cool mist. While the HCM350 itself is not WiFi-connected, it works well alongside smart home devices like smart plugs and humidity sensors to create an automated humidity management system in your home.

Before You Begin

  • Choose a flat, water-resistant surface to place the humidifier — a table or nightstand works well, but avoid placing it directly on hardwood floors where moisture could cause damage
  • Place the humidifier at least a foot away from walls and furniture to allow proper airflow
  • Have clean, cool tap water available to fill the tank
  • If you plan to automate the humidifier with a smart plug, have one ready (any WiFi smart plug rated for the humidifier's wattage will work)
  • Optionally, a smart humidity sensor (such as a SmartThings or Aqara sensor) can provide automated control based on room humidity levels

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Prepare the filter. Remove the wicking filter from its packaging. Soak the filter in cool, clean water for about 10 to 15 minutes before installing it. This pre-soaking helps the filter absorb water more efficiently from the start.
  2. Install the filter. Place the soaked wicking filter into the filter frame or tray inside the humidifier base. Make sure it sits securely and is positioned according to the markings in the base unit.
  3. Fill the water tank. Remove the tank from the base by lifting it up. Unscrew the tank cap, fill the tank with cool tap water, and replace the cap tightly. Do not use hot water, as it can damage internal components and promote mineral buildup.
  4. Place the tank on the base. Set the filled water tank back onto the humidifier base. The tank should sit level and begin dispensing water into the base reservoir. You may hear a small gurgling sound as water flows down — this is normal.
  5. Plug in and power on. Connect the humidifier's power cord to a wall outlet. Turn the control knob to your desired fan speed — the HCM350 typically offers multiple speed settings ranging from low (quiet operation) to high (maximum moisture output).
  6. Let it run. Within a few minutes, you should notice a light, cool mist being dispersed into the room. The UV technology works internally, so there's no visible light or separate indicator to monitor.

Smart Home Integration Tips

While the HCM350 doesn't have built-in WiFi, you can make it smart by plugging it into a WiFi smart plug (such as a GE Cync, Kasa, or Wemo plug). Set the humidifier's physical knob to your preferred speed, then use the smart plug to turn it on and off on a schedule or through voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. For more advanced automation, pair the smart plug with a smart humidity sensor in the same room. Create a rule in your smart home hub to turn on the humidifier when humidity drops below 40 percent and off when it reaches 50 percent. This mimics a built-in humidistat without needing one in the humidifier itself.

Maintenance and Filter Care

The wicking filter should be replaced every one to two months, depending on water hardness and usage frequency. Hard water causes mineral deposits to build up on the filter faster, reducing its effectiveness. Clean the water tank and base weekly with a mixture of water and white vinegar to prevent mold and mineral buildup. Rinse thoroughly before refilling. Never use cleaning chemicals or bleach inside the humidifier.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the humidifier isn't producing mist, check that the tank is properly seated and has water. Verify the filter is installed correctly and isn't completely clogged with mineral deposits — a discolored, hardened filter needs replacement. If the unit makes loud or unusual sounds, make sure the tank cap is tightened securely and the base is on a flat surface. If you notice a musty smell, the tank and base need a thorough cleaning with white vinegar, and the filter should be replaced.
