What's in the Box
Your Honeywell WiFi Water Leak Sensor package includes the water leak detector unit, batteries, a sensing cable or probe (depending on your model variant), and a quick start guide. This sensor connects to your home's WiFi network and sends alerts to the Honeywell Home app when it detects water, helping you catch leaks from washing machines, water heaters, sump pumps, and pipes before they cause significant damage.
Before You Begin
- Download the Honeywell Home app from the App Store or Google Play
- Create a Honeywell Home account or sign in to an existing one
- Confirm your WiFi router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz network — the sensor does not support 5GHz
- Have fresh batteries on hand (type specified in the manual, typically AA or AAA)
- Identify the locations where you want to place sensors — near water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, sinks, toilets, and sump pumps are the highest-priority spots
Step-by-Step Setup
- Install the batteries. Open the battery compartment on the sensor and insert the batteries according to the polarity markings. The sensor's LED should light up or blink briefly, indicating it has power.
- Place the sensor. Position the Honeywell WiFi Water Leak Sensor flat on the floor in the location most likely to encounter water. The sensing contacts (or sensing cable, if included) should be touching the floor surface. For best detection, place the sensor where water would naturally pool first — at the base of a water heater, behind a washing machine, or under a sink's P-trap.
- Open the Honeywell Home app. Tap Add Device or the + icon. Select Water Leak Detector from the device categories. The app will guide you through the pairing process.
- Connect to WiFi. The app will prompt you to press the pairing button on the sensor (usually located on the top or side of the unit). Select your 2.4GHz WiFi network and enter your password. The sensor will join your network within about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Name and assign the sensor. Give the sensor a descriptive name like "Basement Water Heater" or "Laundry Room" so you can immediately identify which sensor triggered an alert.
- Test the sensor. Place a few drops of water or a damp paper towel on the sensing contacts. The sensor should trigger an alert in the Honeywell Home app within seconds, confirming it's working properly. Dry the contacts after testing.
Smart Home Integration
The Honeywell WiFi Water Leak Sensor works with the Honeywell Home app for push notifications and can integrate with Amazon Alexa and IFTTT. With IFTTT, you can create automations like flashing smart lights red when a leak is detected or sending an SMS notification to a family member. If you have a Honeywell WiFi water shutoff valve, you can create an automation to shut off the main water supply automatically when a leak is detected — providing an extra layer of protection when you're away from home.
Optimal Placement Tips
Install sensors at every major water source in your home for comprehensive coverage. Priority locations include the base of the water heater, behind the washing machine, under the kitchen sink, next to the dishwasher, near toilets (especially in basements), and by the sump pump. If the sensor comes with an extension sensing cable, run it along the base of a wall or behind an appliance to cover a wider detection area. Avoid placing sensors in areas with standing condensation, as this can trigger false alarms.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the sensor won't connect to WiFi, verify your network is 2.4GHz and check that you're entering the correct password. Move the sensor closer to the router during setup if needed. If the sensor doesn't alert when water is applied to the contacts, check that the batteries are fresh and the contacts are clean and free of dust or corrosion. If you receive false alerts, make sure the sensor isn't in an area with regular condensation or dripping from HVAC systems. Replace batteries annually or when the Honeywell Home app shows a low battery warning to ensure the sensor is always ready to detect leaks.
