What's in the Box

The IKEA BADRING Water Leak Sensor comes with the sensor unit, a quick start guide, and a pre-installed CR2032 coin cell battery. This small, disc-shaped sensor sits flat on the floor and detects the presence of water using contact probes on its underside. When water reaches the sensor, it triggers an alert through the IKEA Home Smart app and can activate automations. The BADRING communicates using the Thread protocol with Matter support, connecting through the IKEA Dirigera hub for fast, reliable alerts when every second counts.

Prerequisites

Before installing the BADRING sensor, make sure you have:

  • An IKEA Dirigera hub — the BADRING uses Thread protocol and requires the Dirigera hub (not compatible with the older TRADFRI Gateway)
  • The IKEA Home Smart app (version 1.20 or later) installed on your smartphone with notifications enabled
  • A location identified where water leaks are most likely — under sinks, behind toilets, near washing machines, next to water heaters, under dishwashers, and in basements near sump pumps are the most critical spots
  • A dry, level floor surface where the sensor can sit flat with its contact probes touching the ground

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Activate the battery. Turn the sensor over and pull out the plastic battery isolation tab. The pre-installed CR2032 battery will power on the sensor. A brief LED flash confirms activation.
  2. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Select "Sensor" from the device categories.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the small pairing button on the sensor for approximately 10 seconds. The LED indicator will begin pulsing, showing the sensor is broadcasting its Thread signal and ready for pairing.
  4. Complete pairing. The app will detect the BADRING within a few seconds. Tap to confirm the connection, then name the sensor with a specific location like "Kitchen Sink Leak Sensor" or "Washing Machine Leak Sensor." This descriptive naming is critical so you know exactly where the problem is when an alert fires.
  5. Configure notifications. In the sensor's settings, ensure push notifications are enabled for water detection alerts. This is the most important configuration step — a water leak sensor is only useful if it can reach you immediately.
  6. Set up automations. Configure actions that trigger when water is detected, such as flashing smart lights red or cutting power to a washing machine via an IKEA smart plug.
  7. Place the sensor. Set the BADRING flat on the floor with the contact probes facing down. The probes must touch the floor surface directly — avoid thick carpet or uneven surfaces. Position it at the lowest point near the potential leak source where water would accumulate first.

Placement and Integration Tips

Strategic placement is the key to effective leak detection. Under the kitchen sink, place the sensor near the P-trap and supply line connections. Behind the toilet, position it where the wax ring meets the floor. For washing machines, place it beneath the unit near supply hose connections. Near water heaters, set it in the drain pan or next to the base. You can deploy multiple BADRING sensors for comprehensive coverage.

The BADRING's Thread and Matter support means its leak status is exposed to Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa through the Dirigera hub. An Apple Home automation could trigger a water shutoff valve when a leak is detected. In Google Home, the sensor can announce a leak on all smart speakers. Home Assistant users can send SMS alerts, trigger sirens, and control smart water valves.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the BADRING does not send alerts, first verify that notification permissions for the IKEA Home Smart app are enabled on your phone. Test the sensor by placing a few drops of water on a flat surface and setting the sensor on top. If it does not trigger, check that the contact probes are clean and unobstructed. Replace the CR2032 battery if the sensor has been deployed for over a year. For a factory reset, hold the pairing button for 10 seconds and re-pair through the app. Keep the sensor within range of the Dirigera hub or nearby Thread router devices for reliable connectivity.
