What's in the Box
The IKEA STYRBAR Remote Control ships with the four-button remote unit, a magnetic wall-mount bracket with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. The STYRBAR is IKEA's modern replacement for the older TRADFRI five-button remote, featuring a sleeker design with a rounded rectangular shape. It communicates over Zigbee and is powered by two AAA batteries (included). The remote offers four buttons: on, off, and two arrow buttons for brightness adjustment or scene cycling.
Prerequisites
Before you begin setup, make sure the following are in place:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, fully set up and connected to your home network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed and logged in on your phone or tablet
- At least one IKEA smart bulb, light group, or smart blind already paired to your hub
- The two included AAA batteries inserted into the remote (slide off the back panel to access the battery compartment)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Insert the batteries. Slide the back cover off the STYRBAR and insert the two AAA batteries according to the polarity markings inside the compartment. Replace the cover until it clicks into place.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. On the home screen, tap the "+" icon to start adding a new device. Select "Remote or controller" from the available device types.
- Activate pairing mode. On the back of the STYRBAR, locate the small pairing button near the battery compartment. Press and hold it for about 10 seconds. The LED on the front of the remote will begin pulsing, indicating it is in pairing mode and ready to be discovered.
- Pair the remote. The app will scan for nearby Zigbee devices and should detect the STYRBAR within seconds. Tap on it to complete the pairing, then give the remote a descriptive name such as "Living Room STYRBAR."
- Assign devices to control. Navigate to the remote's settings in the app and choose which lights, groups, or blinds it should operate. The STYRBAR can control a single bulb, a room full of lights, or IKEA smart blinds — select the configuration that fits your needs.
- Mount the remote. Peel the adhesive backing from the wall-mount bracket and press it firmly against your wall or any smooth surface. Allow at least 30 seconds for the adhesive to bond. The STYRBAR snaps magnetically onto the bracket, making it look like a permanent wall switch while remaining easy to detach and carry around.
Using the STYRBAR
The top button turns your assigned lights on, and the bottom button turns them off. The left and right arrows have different functions depending on what device type is assigned. When controlling lights, the arrows adjust brightness up and down. When controlling smart blinds like the IKEA FYRTUR or KADRILJ, the arrows open and close the blinds. Hold the arrow buttons for continuous adjustment rather than tapping repeatedly. The STYRBAR communicates directly with paired devices over Zigbee, ensuring instant response without needing the app or internet.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Like other IKEA remotes, the STYRBAR is an input device and will not appear as a controllable accessory in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. The devices it controls, however, are fully accessible in those platforms through the Dirigera hub's Matter support. This provides a seamless experience where the same lights respond to both the STYRBAR and voice commands. Home Assistant users can capture STYRBAR button events through Zigbee2MQTT or the Dirigera integration, enabling powerful custom automations such as double-press actions or contextual behavior based on time of day.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the STYRBAR stops responding, replace both AAA batteries first — even if one battery is low, the remote may behave unpredictably. If the remote still does not work after fresh batteries, reset it by holding the pairing button for 10 seconds and re-pair through the app. Ensure the remote is within Zigbee range of your hub or the nearest Zigbee-powered device like a smart bulb, which extends the mesh network. If the arrow buttons are not adjusting brightness as expected, check the IKEA Home Smart app for firmware updates, as STYRBAR updates have historically improved button responsiveness and functionality.
