What's in the Box
The IKEA TRADFRI Control Outlet comes with the smart plug unit and a quick start guide. This compact, wall-mounted smart plug fits into a standard North American outlet and lets you turn any connected appliance on or off remotely. The TRADFRI Control Outlet communicates over the Zigbee protocol with the IKEA Dirigera hub or the older TRADFRI Gateway. As a mains-powered Zigbee device, it also functions as a Zigbee router, strengthening the mesh network for nearby battery-powered sensors and remotes.
Prerequisites
Before setup, make sure you have the following:
- An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, already configured and connected to your home network
- The IKEA Home Smart app installed and signed in on your smartphone or tablet
- An available wall outlet positioned where you want to control an appliance — lamps, fans, coffee makers, and holiday lights are popular choices
- The appliance you plan to connect should have a simple on/off switch that stays in the "on" position so the smart plug can handle the power toggling
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug in the Control Outlet. Insert the TRADFRI Control Outlet into a standard wall outlet. A small LED indicator on the front will illuminate, confirming the plug has power and is ready for pairing.
- Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Select "Plug" or "Outlet" from the available device categories.
- Pair the outlet. The Control Outlet should automatically enter pairing mode when first powered on. If the app does not detect it, press and hold the small button on the side of the plug for about 10 seconds until the LED begins pulsing, indicating it is in Zigbee discovery mode.
- Confirm and name the device. When the outlet appears in the app, tap to pair it. Name it something descriptive like "Desk Lamp Plug" or "Coffee Maker" and assign it to the appropriate room.
- Plug in your appliance. Connect the appliance you want to control to the front outlet of the TRADFRI Control Outlet. Make sure the appliance's own power switch is set to "on" so the smart plug can manage power delivery.
- Test on/off control. Use the IKEA Home Smart app to toggle the outlet. You should hear a faint click from the relay inside the plug and see the connected appliance turn on or off accordingly.
Schedules and Automations
One of the most practical features of the TRADFRI Control Outlet is scheduling. In the IKEA Home Smart app, you can set the plug to turn on and off at specific times — perfect for automating a morning coffee routine or turning holiday lights on at sunset and off at midnight. You can also assign the outlet to scenes triggered by IKEA remotes or shortcut buttons, giving you physical one-tap control. Pair it with a TRADFRI Motion Sensor to automatically turn on a hallway lamp when motion is detected.
Smart Home Integration Tips
Through the Dirigera hub's Matter support, the TRADFRI Control Outlet can appear in Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. This allows voice commands like "Hey Google, turn on the coffee maker" or "Alexa, turn off the desk lamp." The outlet also acts as a Zigbee router, extending your mesh network's reach. Place it between your hub and distant Zigbee devices to improve connectivity in larger homes. Home Assistant users can integrate the plug through the Dirigera integration or pair it directly with a Zigbee coordinator using Zigbee2MQTT for local control with power state reporting and scheduling automation.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Control Outlet does not respond, unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in. If the issue persists, factory reset by holding the side button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then re-pair through the app. If the outlet clicks but the appliance stays off, check that the appliance's own switch is in the "on" position. Verify the outlet is within Zigbee range of the hub or another powered Zigbee device for consistent performance.
