What's in the Box

The IKEA TRADFRI LED Bulb E12 Thread comes with the smart bulb and a quick start guide. This candelabra-base bulb is designed for smaller fixtures such as chandeliers, sconces, accent lamps, and decorative light fixtures that use the E12 socket. It features Thread protocol support alongside Zigbee, providing faster and more reliable connectivity through the IKEA Dirigera hub. The bulb offers tunable white light from warm to daylight temperatures and serves as a Thread mesh router when powered on, strengthening your home network for other Thread devices.

Prerequisites

Before getting started, confirm you have:

  • An IKEA Dirigera hub connected to your network — the Dirigera is required for Thread protocol support and Matter integration
  • The IKEA Home Smart app installed on your iOS or Android device
  • A light fixture with an E12 candelabra socket — these are the smaller screw-in bases commonly found in chandeliers, wall sconces, and decorative lamps
  • The fixture's power switch turned off before you begin installation

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Turn off the power. Switch off the light fixture at the wall switch or circuit breaker. E12 fixtures are often in elevated positions like chandeliers, so make sure you have safe access with a step stool or ladder if needed.
  2. Install the bulb. Screw the TRADFRI E12 bulb into the candelabra socket by turning clockwise until it seats firmly. The E12 base is smaller and more delicate than standard E26, so use gentle pressure.
  3. Restore power. Turn the light switch on. The bulb will light up at full brightness with warm white light, signaling it is ready for pairing.
  4. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device and choose "Light" from the device type options.
  5. Pair the bulb. The app will scan for nearby devices. With a Dirigera hub, the bulb will preferentially connect via Thread for optimal performance. Tap the bulb when it appears to complete pairing.
  6. Name and organize. Assign a descriptive name like "Dining Room Chandelier" or "Hallway Sconce" and place the bulb in the appropriate room in the app.
  7. Test controls. Adjust brightness using the slider and experiment with color temperature settings. For a chandelier with multiple E12 bulbs, pair each one individually, then create a group in the app to control them all simultaneously.

Working with Multi-Bulb Fixtures

Chandeliers and multi-arm sconces often use several E12 bulbs. For the best experience, pair each bulb individually with the Dirigera hub, then create a light group in the IKEA Home Smart app. This allows you to control all the chandelier's bulbs with a single tap or voice command while still being able to adjust individual bulbs if desired. When creating a group, assign all the bulbs to the same room for consistent behavior with voice assistants and automations.

Smart Home Integration Tips

Through the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge, these E12 Thread bulbs appear in Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Group them in your preferred ecosystem for unified control — for example, create a "Dining Room" group in Apple Home that includes all chandelier bulbs, then say "Hey Siri, dim the dining room to 40 percent." The Thread connectivity means each powered bulb extends the mesh network, so a chandelier with multiple Thread bulbs significantly improves the Thread coverage in that area of your home. You can also pair IKEA remotes like the STYRBAR or RODRET to control the group directly without using your phone.

Quick Troubleshooting

If an E12 bulb does not appear during pairing, factory reset it by toggling the power switch off and on six times with one-second intervals. The bulb will flash to confirm the reset. Retry pairing immediately, as the discovery window is time-limited. In multi-bulb fixtures, the power toggle resets all bulbs simultaneously, so you may need to re-pair each one. If a bulb pairs over Zigbee instead of Thread, update your Dirigera hub firmware to the latest version and re-pair the bulb. If the bulb flickers in a dimmer-controlled fixture, note that TRADFRI smart bulbs handle dimming through the app and should not be used with traditional wall dimmer switches.
