What's in the Box

Your Kwikset Aura Bluetooth Smart Lock includes the exterior keypad assembly, interior assembly with thumb turn, mounting plate, strike plate, two physical backup keys, four AA batteries, and all necessary mounting hardware. A quick-start guide is included with your default user code and programming instructions. Unlike WiFi-based Kwikset locks, the Aura uses Bluetooth, which means your phone needs to be within Bluetooth range to control the lock directly.

Prerequisites

The Kwikset Aura fits standard deadbolt door preparations with a 2-1/8" cross bore and 1" edge bore. Your door should be 1-3/8" to 2" thick. Have a Phillips screwdriver on hand. Download the Kwikset app on your smartphone before starting, as the Aura relies on Bluetooth pairing with the app for smart features. Make sure your phone's Bluetooth is enabled and that you're standing within a few feet of the lock during the pairing process.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove your existing deadbolt hardware completely, including the latch assembly and strike plate from the door frame.
  2. Insert the new latch bolt into the edge bore. The "UP" arrow on the latch should point upward. Secure the latch faceplate to the door edge with the included screws.
  3. From the outside of the door, feed the exterior assembly's cable through the cross bore. Position the keypad assembly flush and straight against the door.
  4. On the interior side, connect the ribbon cable from the exterior assembly to the interior mounting plate. Be careful not to crimp or pinch the cable.
  5. Place the mounting plate over the bolt posts and tighten the two long mounting screws evenly. Alternate between screws to keep everything aligned. Do not overtighten.
  6. Snap the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. You should feel it click securely into place.
  7. Install the strike plate on the door frame. Test the deadbolt's throw by turning the thumb turn to confirm smooth operation.
  8. Insert four fresh AA batteries into the interior compartment and close the battery cover. The keypad should light up briefly to indicate power.
  9. Test the lock with the thumb turn, backup key, and default code before moving to the app pairing step.

Pairing with the Kwikset App

Open the Kwikset app and sign in or create a new account. Tap "Add Device" and select "Aura" from the product list. The app will prompt you to press the "A" button on the lock's interior assembly to enable Bluetooth pairing. Hold your phone within three feet of the lock during this step. Once paired, you'll set a new master code and can delete the factory default code. The app lets you create up to 250 unique user codes with customizable schedules, perfect for giving temporary access to guests, dog walkers, or house cleaners.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Kwikset Aura connects via Bluetooth, which means it works within about 40 feet of your phone. For remote access when you're away from home, you can pair the Aura with an Apple Home Hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) since it supports Apple HomeKit. This lets you lock and unlock from anywhere and create HomeKit automations like auto-locking when everyone leaves. The Aura does not natively support Alexa or Google Assistant, but HomeKit users can use Siri voice commands. For broader smart home integration, consider pairing through HomeKit scenes and automations.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the Aura doesn't appear in the Kwikset app during pairing, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and that you're within close range. Restart the app and try again. If the keypad is unresponsive, remove the batteries for 30 seconds and reinstall them. For a factory reset, remove one battery, press and hold the program button, reinsert the battery while still holding the button, and wait 30 seconds until the lock beeps. This clears all codes and Bluetooth pairings. If the deadbolt binds during locking, slightly loosen the mounting screws and check the alignment of the latch and strike plate.
