What You'll Need
- Legrand Radiant Smart Switch (Matter)
- Screwdriver and non-contact voltage tester
- Wire connectors (usually included)
- A Matter-compatible app (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings)
- Neutral wire in the switch box (required)
Most homes built after the 1980s have neutral wires. If you only see two wires plus ground in the box, this switch will not work.
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Shut off the breaker for the circuit you are working on. Use a voltage tester on the wires inside the box to confirm zero power. Do not rely on the light switch alone.
Step 2: Remove the Old Switch
Remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything -- it makes troubleshooting much easier later.
Step 3: Identify and Connect Wires
- Line (hot): Power from the breaker -- usually black
- Load: Wire to the light fixture -- also usually black
- Neutral: White wires bundled in the back of the box
- Ground: Green or bare copper
Connect each wire to the matching terminal on the switch. Tug every connection to confirm it is tight -- loose wires are the most common cause of switch problems.
Step 4: Mount and Test
Fold the wires back into the box, screw the switch into place, and attach the wall plate. Turn the breaker back on and press the switch to confirm the light works. If nothing happens, turn the breaker off and recheck wiring.
Step 5: Pair with Matter
Open your preferred Matter app and scan the QR code on the switch or enter the numeric setup code. Pairing takes about 30-60 seconds. Once added, rename the switch and assign it to a room.
Platform Tips
- Apple Home: Tap "+", scan the Matter code. The switch appears as a light accessory you can add to scenes and automations.
- Google Home: Go to Devices > Add > New Device and scan the code. Works with Google routines and any Nest speaker.
- Alexa: Devices > "+" > Add Device > Matter. Works with Alexa routines and voice commands.
- Home Assistant: Add via Settings > Devices > Matter. A Thread border router on your network gives the best performance.
- Multi-admin: Matter lets you pair this single switch to Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa simultaneously.
Troubleshooting
- No power to switch: Verify the breaker is on and recheck all four wire connections. Swapping line and load is a common mistake.
- Matter pairing fails: Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi as your hub. Try the numeric code if the QR will not scan. Stay within a few feet of the switch.
- Switch goes offline: Check Wi-Fi signal at the switch location. A mesh node in the same room helps.
- LED indicator too bright at night: Most Legrand switches let you dim or disable the LED through the app or a button combination on the switch itself.
- Factory reset: Hold the switch button for 10-15 seconds until the LED flashes. This removes all pairings.
