What's in the Box

Your Lutron Diva Smart Dimmer (Matter) package includes the Diva smart dimmer switch, a decorative Claro wallplate, wire connectors, and installation instructions. The Diva Smart Dimmer represents Lutron's entry into the Matter smart home standard, allowing it to work directly with Matter-compatible platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings without requiring a Lutron bridge. It supports dimmable LEDs up to 150W and incandescent or halogen bulbs up to 300W.

Prerequisites

Before starting installation, make sure you have:

  • A Matter-compatible smart home hub or controller (Apple HomePod, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub, Amazon Echo 4th gen or newer, or a SmartThings hub)
  • A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (the Diva Smart Dimmer connects via Wi-Fi, not Clear Connect RF)
  • A neutral wire in the switch box (required for the Diva Smart Dimmer)
  • A non-contact voltage tester and Phillips screwdriver
  • The corresponding smart home app (Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa) ready for pairing

Unlike Caseta products, the Diva Smart Dimmer with Matter does not need a Lutron bridge. It connects directly to your Wi-Fi network and communicates using the Matter protocol, which provides local control through your existing smart home hub.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off the appropriate circuit breaker and use a voltage tester to verify the switch box is de-energized.
  2. Remove the existing switch and faceplate. Identify the hot (line), load, neutral (white), and ground wires.
  3. Connect the Diva dimmer's green wire to ground, black to the hot line wire, blue or red to the load wire, and white to the neutral bundle. Secure each connection with the provided wire connectors.
  4. Mount the dimmer in the electrical box and attach the Claro wallplate. The Diva features a large paddle on one side for on/off and a slim slider bar on the other for dimming level adjustment.
  5. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The dimmer's LED indicator at the bottom should glow, confirming it has power.

App Pairing via Matter

The Diva Smart Dimmer includes a Matter setup code printed on the device and included on a card in the box. To pair, open your preferred smart home app and select "Add Device." Scan the Matter QR code or manually enter the numeric setup code. Your smart home hub will discover the dimmer on your Wi-Fi network and add it to your ecosystem. Because Matter supports multi-admin, you can pair the same dimmer to multiple platforms simultaneously. For example, add it to Apple Home first, then share it to Google Home and Alexa so everyone in your household can use their preferred assistant.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Diva Smart Dimmer works with automations in all Matter-compatible platforms. Set up routines to dim lights at bedtime, brighten them in the morning, or respond to motion sensors. Because the dimmer connects via Wi-Fi rather than a proprietary protocol, it benefits from your existing network infrastructure but also depends on Wi-Fi reliability. Place your router to provide strong signal at the switch location. The physical slider on the dimmer always works regardless of network status, ensuring you never lose manual control. You can also pair the dimmer with a Lutron Pico remote for additional physical control points, as the Diva line maintains backward compatibility with Pico remotes via Clear Connect RF.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the dimmer does not appear during Matter pairing, ensure your smart home hub supports Matter and that your phone and hub are on the same 2.4GHz network. The Diva does not support 5GHz Wi-Fi. If lights flicker, check Lutron's LED compatibility tool and adjust the low-end trim by pressing and holding the bottom of the paddle for six seconds. To factory reset the dimmer for re-pairing, press and hold the top of the paddle and the bottom of the dimmer bar simultaneously for 10 seconds until the LED blinks amber.
