What You'll Need
- Meross Smart Outdoor Plug (MSS620)
- Meross app (iOS or Android)
- Meross account
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Outdoor GFCI-protected outlet
Step-by-Step Setup
- Plug the MSS620 into an outdoor GFCI outlet. Make sure the outlet's weatherproof cover can still close around the plug's cord.
- Download the Meross app if you have not already, and sign in.
- Add the device in the app:
- Tap "+" and select the outdoor plug from the device list
- Confirm both outlet LEDs are flashing, indicating pairing mode
- Connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi by entering your network credentials.
- Name each outlet. The MSS620 has two independently controlled outlets, so give them descriptive names like "garden lights" and "fountain pump."
Key Features
- IP44 weatherproof rating for outdoor use
- Two independently controlled outlets
- Works with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit (select models)
- Sunrise/sunset scheduling based on your GPS location
- 15A total capacity shared between outlets
- Individual scheduling per outlet
HomeKit Setup for Supported Models
Some versions of the MSS620 include Apple HomeKit support. If yours does:
- Open the Apple Home app and tap "+" to add a new accessory.
- Scan the HomeKit code on the device label. Both outlets will appear as separate accessories in HomeKit.
- You can set up HomeKit automations like turning on patio lights when you arrive home or shutting them off at a specific time.
Practical Outdoor Use Cases
- Patio lighting: Run string lights on one outlet with a sunset-to-midnight schedule, and keep the other outlet free for a portable speaker or bug zapper.
- Garden automation: Control a decorative fountain and garden spotlights on independent schedules. The sunrise/sunset feature adjusts automatically throughout the year.
- Holiday displays: Put different sets of decorations on each outlet with different schedules. Yard inflatables can go off at bedtime while static light displays run later.
Outdoor Installation Tips
- Even with IP44 protection, position the plug under an eave or outlet cover when possible to minimize direct rain exposure.
- Keep total connected load under 15A across both outlets combined.
- Run a test of the GFCI outlet before plugging in the Meross unit to confirm the safety circuit is working.
Troubleshooting
- Outdoor Wi-Fi signal is weak: Exterior walls and distance from the router are the biggest culprits. Consider adding a mesh node indoors near the exterior wall, or an outdoor-rated access point for reliable coverage.
- GFCI keeps tripping: Reduce the load on the circuit. Also check all connections for moisture intrusion, which can cause ground faults. Make sure the cord connections are tight and dry.
- HomeKit pairing: Scan the HomeKit code printed on the device label. If scanning does not work, try entering the code manually. The code is also included in the packaging materials.
- One outlet appears offline while the other works: Both outlets connect through a single Wi-Fi radio. If one is unresponsive, try toggling it in the app, or power cycle the entire unit by unplugging and re-plugging it.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the LEDs flash in a different pattern. Both outlets will reset and you will need to set up from scratch.
