What's in the Box

Your Nanoleaf Essentials BR30 Smart Bulb package includes the BR30 LED smart bulb and a quick start guide. The BR30 form factor is designed for recessed can lights, track lighting, and fixtures that use the wider flood-style bulb format. It features a standard E26 base, produces up to 750 lumens, and supports full RGBWW color output with over 16 million colors and tunable white from 2700K warm to 6500K cool daylight. Like all Nanoleaf Essentials products, it connects via Bluetooth and Thread with Matter support.

Prerequisites

Before beginning setup, ensure you have:

  • A recessed can light or compatible fixture with an E26 socket
  • The wall switch controlling the fixture set to the "on" position
  • The Nanoleaf app installed on your iOS or Android device
  • Bluetooth enabled on your smartphone
  • A Thread border router recommended for best performance (Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K 2nd gen or later, or another Thread-capable hub)

The BR30 shape is wider and shorter than a standard A19 bulb, making it ideal for downlighting in ceiling cans. Verify that your fixture's trim ring accommodates the BR30 diameter before installation.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Turn off the wall switch or circuit to the fixture you plan to install the bulb in. Remove the existing bulb from the fixture.
  2. Screw the Nanoleaf Essentials BR30 bulb into the E26 socket. Ensure it is seated firmly but do not over-tighten.
  3. Turn the wall switch on. The bulb will power up and begin cycling through colors or pulsing white, indicating it is in pairing mode.
  4. Open the Nanoleaf app on your phone and tap "Add Device" or the "+" icon.
  5. Select "Essentials Bulb" from the device list. The app will search via Bluetooth for the bulb.
  6. Tap the discovered bulb to begin pairing. The app may prompt a firmware update during the initial connection. Allow it to complete fully.
  7. Name the bulb (for example, "Kitchen Can Light 1") and assign it to a room for organized control.

App Pairing and Features

Once paired, the Nanoleaf app gives you full control over the BR30 bulb's brightness, color, and color temperature. Use the color wheel for custom colors or browse pre-made scenes such as "Northern Lights," "Sunset," and "Forest." The circadian lighting feature automatically adjusts the bulb's color temperature throughout the day, starting with energizing cool white in the morning and transitioning to warm tones in the evening to support natural sleep patterns.

If you have multiple Essentials bulbs, group them in the app for synchronized control. This is particularly useful for recessed lighting arrays where you want all cans to display the same scene.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Nanoleaf Essentials BR30 supports Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Add it to Apple Home using the HomeKit or Matter code on the bulb's packaging for Siri voice control. For Alexa, enable the Nanoleaf skill in the Alexa app. For Google Home, link your Nanoleaf account. With Matter support, you can share the bulb across multiple platforms for multi-assistant households. Group the BR30 with other Essentials products to create whole-room lighting automations controlled by a single voice command or schedule.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the bulb does not enter pairing mode upon first power-on, toggle the wall switch off and on five times with approximately one second between each toggle. This resets the bulb to pairing mode. If the Nanoleaf app cannot detect the bulb, confirm Bluetooth is active on your phone and you are within close range. Make sure no other phone is actively paired to the same bulb. For slow response times after setup, verify that a Thread border router is present on your network. Without Thread, the bulb relies solely on Bluetooth, which has a shorter range and slower communication. If the bulb drops offline, power cycle it and check your Thread border router's status.
