What's in the Box

Your Nanoleaf Skylight (Starter Kit 3-Pack) package includes three square ceiling-mounted LED light panels, a controller unit, mounting hardware with junction box adapters, wire connectors, linking cables for connecting panels together, and a quick start guide. The Nanoleaf Skylight is designed to replace or supplement traditional ceiling light fixtures, providing flat-panel illumination with full RGBWW color support. Each panel measures approximately 12 inches square and produces up to 1,400 lumens of bright, even illumination suitable for ambient room lighting.

Prerequisites

Before installing the Skylight panels, ensure you have:

  • Existing ceiling junction boxes where you want to mount the panels (one junction box per panel, or you can daisy-chain from a single box)
  • A non-contact voltage tester and basic electrical tools (screwdriver, wire strippers)
  • Access to the circuit breaker controlling the ceiling fixture circuit
  • The Nanoleaf app installed on your smartphone
  • A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network

The Skylight requires hardwired installation to a ceiling junction box, making it a more permanent installation than wall-mounted panels. If you are not comfortable with electrical wiring, consider hiring a licensed electrician. The panels connect to Wi-Fi through the controller unit for smart features.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the ceiling light circuit. Use a voltage tester at the junction box to confirm power is off.
  2. Remove the existing ceiling light fixture from the junction box and disconnect the wires.
  3. Mount the Skylight adapter plate to the junction box using the included hardware. This plate provides the connection point for the first Skylight panel.
  4. Connect the Skylight's wiring to the junction box wires: black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green or bare to ground. Secure connections with wire connectors.
  5. Attach the first Skylight panel to the adapter plate. It should click or snap securely into position.
  6. For additional panels, use the included linking cables to connect the second and third panels to the first. Mount them using the provided ceiling anchors or adjacent junction boxes.
  7. Install the controller unit in the first panel or as directed by the installation guide.
  8. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The panels should illuminate.
  9. Open the Nanoleaf app, tap "Add Device," select "Skylight," and follow the prompts to connect to your Wi-Fi network.

App Pairing and Customization

Once connected, the Nanoleaf app maps your Skylight panel layout and provides access to a wide range of scenes and color options. Use the panels as primary room lighting by setting a bright cool white for task work, or switch to warm ambient tones for evening relaxation. The Skylight panels support dynamic scenes that animate color across the panels, as well as static color settings. The circadian lighting feature automatically adjusts color temperature throughout the day.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Nanoleaf Skylight works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Because the Skylight replaces your primary ceiling lighting, voice control is especially convenient. Use commands like "Hey Google, turn on the kitchen lights" or "Alexa, set the living room to warm white." Create automations that brighten the lights in the morning and dim them at night. You can also set the panels to respond to motion sensors or door sensors in your smart home ecosystem for hands-free activation when entering a room.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the panels do not light up after installation, verify the circuit breaker is on and check all wire connections at the junction box. Loose neutral or ground connections are common causes of installation failures. If the panels illuminate but do not connect to Wi-Fi, make sure you are using a 2.4GHz network. If individual panels in a multi-panel setup do not light up, check the linking cables between panels for secure connections. If the app cannot find the Skylight during setup, try resetting the panels by turning the wall switch off and on five times in succession. Contact Nanoleaf support if wiring issues persist, as incorrect wiring can damage the panels.
