What You'll Need
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
- Smartphone with the Nespresso app (iOS or Android)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Nespresso Vertuo capsules (not compatible with Original line pods)
Step 1: Unbox and Prepare
Remove all packaging and protective film. Pull out the water tank, wash it with warm water, and fill it to the max line. Slide it back until it clicks. Place the drip tray and cup support in position.
Step 2: Run the Cleaning Cycle
Before your first coffee, flush the system. Close the head without a pod, lock it, and press the button. Run this two or three times with fresh water. Skip this step and your first few cups will taste off.
Step 3: Download the Nespresso App
Install the app and create an account or sign in. The app also handles capsule ordering, so it is worth setting up your address and payment info now.
Step 4: Connect to Wi-Fi
In the app, go to machine connection. It uses Bluetooth to find your Vertuo Next, so make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Follow the prompts to connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (5GHz is not supported). Wi-Fi is not required for brewing -- it enables descaling reminders, firmware updates, and usage notifications.
Step 5: Brew Your First Cup
Lift the lever, drop a capsule in with the barcode facing down, close and lock the head, and press the button. The machine spins the pod at high speed and reads the barcode to automatically set water volume, temperature, and extraction time for that specific coffee.
Capsule Sizes
- Espresso (1.35 oz) -- small, strong shot
- Double Espresso (2.7 oz) -- two shots in one brew
- Gran Lungo (5 oz) -- longer espresso-style
- Mug (7.77 oz) -- standard coffee cup
- Alto (14 oz) -- large pour using XL capsules
The barcode controls the brew, so you cannot change the volume for a given capsule. Different size means a different capsule.
Smart Features
The Vertuo Next does not integrate with Alexa, Google Home, or HomeKit. Wi-Fi is only used by the Nespresso app for firmware updates, descaling alerts, and capsule reordering.
Troubleshooting
- Not brewing: Check the water tank is seated and full. Make sure the pod is barcode-down and the head is fully locked. A flashing orange button means it is still heating up.
- Weak or watery coffee: Usually means the machine needs descaling. Hard water areas may need it every 1-2 months. The Nespresso descaling kit takes about 20 minutes.
- Wi-Fi pairing fails: Confirm Bluetooth is on and you are near the machine. Only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi works. Restart both the machine and your phone if it stalls.
- Pod gets stuck: Open and close the head a few times to trigger the ejection mechanism. If jammed, unplug, let it cool, and carefully remove with a utensil.
- Blinking lights: Red usually means an error or the head is not locked. Orange often means heating up or time to descale. Check the app for specifics.
- Leaking: Check that the water tank is seated properly. Leaking during brewing usually means the capsule is not positioned correctly.
