What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Go Portable Light
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- The included USB-C charging cable
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- A Wi-Fi connection on the same network as your Hue Bridge
Step 1: Charge the Hue Go
Before setting up your Hue Go, give it a full charge. Connect the included USB-C cable to the charging port on the back of the device and plug the other end into a USB power adapter or a USB port on your computer. The LED indicator will show the charging status. A full charge takes approximately 2.5 hours and provides up to 48 hours of battery life depending on brightness and color settings.
Step 2: Power On the Hue Go
Press the button on the back of the Hue Go to turn it on. The light will turn on with a default warm white glow. The physical button on the device also lets you cycle through several built-in light effects without needing the app, including candlelight, sunset, and a color loop. However, for full control and smart features, you will want to pair it with your Hue Bridge.
Step 3: Pair with Your Hue Bridge
- Open the Philips Hue app on your phone.
- Go to Settings, then Lights, and tap Add Light.
- The app will search for nearby Zigbee devices.
- When the Hue Go appears, tap it to add it to your Bridge.
- Assign it to a room. Since the Hue Go is portable, you might create a room called "Portable" or assign it to the room where you plan to use it most often.
Step 4: Explore Color and Brightness Controls
The Hue Go supports the full Philips Hue color and white range. In the app, tap on the Hue Go to access its controls:
- Color wheel: Choose from over 16 million colors for mood lighting.
- White temperature: Adjust from 2000K warm candlelight to 6500K cool daylight.
- Brightness slider: Dim from 1% to 100%. Lower brightness extends battery life significantly.
- Scenes: Apply preset scenes or create custom ones for different occasions.
Step 5: Use the Hue Go Portably
One of the standout features of the Hue Go is its rechargeable battery, which lets you use it anywhere without being tethered to a power outlet. Here are some popular use cases:
- Outdoor dining: Place it on a patio table for colorful ambient lighting during dinner.
- Nightlight: Set it to a very dim warm white in a hallway or child's bedroom.
- Movie night: Use it behind your TV or on a shelf with a scene like "Arctic Aurora" for immersive backlighting.
- Camping or garden parties: Bring it outside for portable mood lighting.
When the Hue Go is outside of Zigbee range of the Bridge, it will continue to display the last color and brightness you set. The physical button on the back still works for cycling through built-in effects.
Step 6: Set Up Automations
When the Hue Go is within Zigbee range and paired to the Bridge, you can include it in automations. Go to the Automations tab to create routines such as turning the Go on at sunset with a warm amber glow, syncing it with entertainment areas for movie nights, or having it gradually brighten in the morning as a wake-up light.
Tips
- The Hue Go produces up to 300 lumens, making it ideal for accent and mood lighting rather than primary room illumination.
- When plugged in, the Hue Go operates at full brightness. On battery, maximum brightness may be slightly reduced to extend battery life.
- The Hue Go is not waterproof. While it is great for covered patios and screened porches, do not leave it exposed to rain.
- To maximize battery life, use warmer colors and lower brightness levels. Deep blues and greens are more power-efficient than reds and whites.
