What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus V4 (1m Extension)
- An existing Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus V4 (2m Base Kit) already installed
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A clean, dry surface for mounting
- Rubbing alcohol or surface cleaner
- Scissors (if you need to cut the extension to length)
Understanding the Extension
The Hue Lightstrip Plus V4 1m Extension is designed to add length to an existing Lightstrip Plus V4 base kit. It does not include a power supply or controller. You cannot use the extension on its own. The extension connects to the end of the base kit strip (or to the end of a previously connected extension) to extend the total length by one meter.
Step 1: Power Off the Existing Lightstrip
Before connecting the extension, unplug the power adapter from the wall outlet for the existing Lightstrip Plus base kit. Working with the strip powered off prevents any issues during the connection process.
Step 2: Connect the Extension
- Locate the connector end of your existing lightstrip. It will have a small flat plug at the end opposite the controller.
- Align the connector on the extension strip with the connector on the base kit. The connectors are keyed to only fit one way.
- Press the two connectors together firmly until they click. Make sure the connection is snug and secure.
The connection point should feel solid. A loose connection can cause the extension to flicker or not light up at all.
Step 3: Test Before Mounting
Before peeling off the adhesive backing, plug the power adapter back in and verify the extension lights up along with the base kit. Both the original strip and the extension should display the same color and brightness. If the extension does not light up, disconnect and reconnect the connector, making sure it is fully seated.
Step 4: Prepare the Surface and Mount
- Clean the surface where the extension will be mounted with rubbing alcohol or surface cleaner.
- Let the surface dry completely.
- Peel off the adhesive backing on the extension strip gradually.
- Press the extension firmly onto the surface, working from the connection point outward.
Step 5: Cut to Length If Needed
Like the base kit, the 1m extension has cut marks at regular intervals. If 1 meter is too long for your remaining surface, cut the strip at the nearest cut mark using scissors. Cut only at the marked lines to avoid damaging the circuitry. The cut portion cannot be reattached.
Step 6: Verify in the Hue App
Open the Philips Hue app and check the light you originally added for the base kit strip. The extension does not appear as a separate device. Instead, it becomes part of the same lightstrip, controlled as a single light. Adjust the color and brightness to confirm the extension matches the rest of the strip seamlessly.
Tips
- You can chain multiple extensions together. The maximum recommended total length depends on the power supply capacity of the base kit. Philips recommends no more than three 1m extensions (5m total including the 2m base), though performance may vary.
- If you need to go around a corner, create a gentle loop rather than a sharp fold. Sharp bends can damage the flexible circuit board inside the strip.
- The extension displays the same color as the rest of the strip since the Lightstrip Plus (non-Gradient) shows a single color along its entire length.
- If the adhesive is not strong enough for your surface, consider using LED strip mounting clips or an aluminum channel to hold the strip in place.
- Make sure the total length of your lightstrip does not put you in a location too far from the Hue Bridge. If needed, other Hue bulbs between the strip and the Bridge will extend the Zigbee mesh range.
