What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Outdoor Lightstrip (5m)
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- An outdoor power outlet or weatherproof extension cord
- Mounting clips (included) or additional outdoor-rated mounting hardware
- A clean mounting surface (deck railing, patio edge, fence, architectural trim)
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
Step 1: Plan Your Outdoor Installation
The Hue Outdoor Lightstrip is 5 meters long and rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, making it suitable for permanent outdoor installation. Before mounting, plan the route the strip will take. Popular installation locations include:
- Along deck railings or the edge of a patio
- Under eaves or along rooflines
- Around garden borders or pathway edges
- Along fence tops or pergola beams
- Under outdoor stairs for safety lighting
Measure the area to confirm the 5-meter length is sufficient. This strip cannot be cut, so plan for the full length.
Step 2: Verify Zigbee Range
The Outdoor Lightstrip communicates with your Hue Bridge over Zigbee, which has a range of approximately 30 to 50 feet indoors and farther outdoors without obstructions. If your outdoor installation is far from the Bridge, place Hue bulbs in fixtures between the Bridge and the outdoor strip to extend the Zigbee mesh network. A porch light with a Hue bulb works well as a relay point.
Step 3: Mount the Lightstrip
- Clean the mounting surface to remove dirt, moisture, and debris.
- Attach the included mounting clips to the surface at regular intervals using screws or the adhesive backing, depending on the surface material.
- Snap the lightstrip into the mounting clips, starting from the power supply end.
- Route the strip along your planned path, using clips at every 30 to 40 centimeters for secure attachment.
- For corners, create gentle curves. Avoid sharp bends that could damage the strip.
Step 4: Connect Power
The Outdoor Lightstrip includes a weatherproof power supply. Plug the power supply into an outdoor-rated outlet or a GFCI-protected outlet. The power supply itself should be sheltered from direct rain if possible, even though the strip is rated for outdoor exposure. If the outlet is far from the strip, use a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord rated for permanent outdoor use.
Step 5: Pair with Your Hue Bridge
- Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
- Tap Add Light and let the app scan.
- When the Outdoor Lightstrip appears, tap to pair it with the Bridge.
- Assign it to an "Outdoor" room or create a room for your patio or deck.
Step 6: Set Colors and Scenes
The Outdoor Lightstrip supports the full Hue White and Color range. Use the app to choose lighting that complements your outdoor space:
- Warm white (2700K): A classic, inviting glow for everyday evening use.
- Cool white (5000K): Bright functional lighting for outdoor cooking or tasks.
- Colored accents: Set seasonal colors for holidays or use your team's colors for game day.
- Sunset tones: Warm oranges and reds for a relaxed evening atmosphere.
Step 7: Create Outdoor Automations
Outdoor lighting benefits greatly from automation. In the Hue app, set up routines to turn the strip on at sunset and off at a set time, dim the lights late at night, or trigger the strip when the Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor detects activity in your yard.
Tips
- The Outdoor Lightstrip is IP67 rated, meaning it can withstand temporary submersion in water. It handles rain, snow, and sprinkler spray without issue.
- The strip produces up to 1800 lumens across 5 meters, providing solid accent lighting but not enough for security-level illumination.
- This strip shows one color at a time across its length. For multi-color gradients, look at the indoor Gradient Lightstrip instead.
- If the adhesive on the mounting clips weakens over time due to weather exposure, replace them with stainless steel screw-in clips for a more permanent installation.
- Avoid installing in locations where the strip could be stepped on or crushed, such as across walking paths.
