What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Secure Camera
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router, firmware must be up to date)
  • A Wi-Fi network with strong signal at the camera location
  • A power outlet near the installation location
  • The included USB-C power cable and adapter
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • The included mounting hardware (wall mount bracket and screws)

Understanding Hue Secure

The Philips Hue Secure Camera is unique among security cameras because it integrates directly with the Hue ecosystem. This means your camera can trigger your Hue lights when motion is detected, such as flashing lights to deter intruders or turning on porch lights when someone approaches. The camera connects to your Wi-Fi network for video streaming but communicates with the Hue Bridge for smart home integration.

Step 1: Choose a Location

Select a location with a clear view of the area you want to monitor. The camera provides a wide-angle view and works indoors. Consider these placement tips:

  • Position at 7 to 8 feet high for the best field of view.
  • Aim it at entry points like doors or windows.
  • Ensure a power outlet is within reach of the USB-C cable.
  • Avoid pointing directly at a window, as reflections and glare will reduce image quality.
  • Check that your Wi-Fi signal is strong at the chosen location.

Step 2: Power On the Camera

Connect the USB-C cable to the camera and plug the power adapter into a wall outlet. The camera's LED indicator will light up to show it is receiving power. Wait for the LED to begin blinking, indicating the camera is ready for setup.

Step 3: Add the Camera in the Hue App

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights & Devices.
  2. Tap Add Device and select Hue Secure Camera.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to scan the QR code on the bottom of the camera or on the quick-start card.
  4. The app will prompt you to connect the camera to your Wi-Fi network. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
  5. Wait for the camera to connect. This may take 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 4: Mount the Camera

  1. Use the included mounting bracket. Hold it against the wall or ceiling at your chosen location.
  2. Mark the screw positions and drill pilot holes.
  3. Secure the bracket with screws and wall anchors.
  4. Attach the camera to the bracket and adjust the angle to cover the desired area.
  5. Route the power cable neatly along the wall using cable clips.

Step 5: Configure Camera Settings

In the Hue app, tap on the camera to access its settings:

  • Motion detection zones: Draw zones on the camera view to define which areas should trigger alerts. This prevents false alerts from areas with constant movement.
  • Notification preferences: Choose whether to receive push notifications for all motion events or only when specific conditions are met.
  • Video quality: Select between standard and high-definition recording quality.
  • Privacy mode: Enable this to disable the camera and microphone when you are home.

Step 6: Set Up Light and Camera Automations

The real power of the Hue Secure Camera is its integration with your Hue lights. Set up automations such as:

  • Intruder deterrent: Flash all lights red when the camera detects motion while you are away.
  • Welcome lighting: Turn on entryway lights when the camera sees someone approaching the door.
  • Night monitoring: Automatically switch to night vision mode and turn on a dim hallway light when motion is detected at night.

Step 7: Consider Hue Secure Subscription

The camera works without a subscription for live viewing and basic features. A Hue Secure subscription adds cloud video recording, 30-day video history, and advanced detection features like person recognition. You can start with the free tier and upgrade later if you want recorded footage stored in the cloud.

Tips

  • The camera requires a strong Wi-Fi connection for reliable video streaming. If your Wi-Fi is weak at the camera location, consider a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system.
  • Video is end-to-end encrypted for privacy, meaning only you can view your camera feeds.
  • The camera's built-in microphone and speaker enable two-way communication through the Hue app.
  • Keep the Hue Bridge firmware updated to ensure compatibility with the latest camera features and security patches.
