What You Will Need
- Philips Hue White A19 LED Bulb
- A Philips Hue Bridge (sold separately or included in starter kits)
- A light fixture with a standard E26 socket
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- A Wi-Fi connection on the same network as your Hue Bridge
Step 1: Prepare Your Hue Bridge
Before installing the bulb, make sure your Philips Hue Bridge is already set up and connected to your router via Ethernet. Open the Hue app to confirm the Bridge is online. If you have not set up a Bridge yet, you will need to do that first, as all Hue bulbs communicate through the Bridge using the Zigbee wireless protocol. They cannot connect directly to your Wi-Fi network.
Step 2: Install the Bulb
Turn off the light fixture using the wall switch or lamp switch. Remove any existing bulb from the socket. Screw in the Philips Hue White A19 LED Bulb and tighten it gently until it is snug. Turn the switch back on. The bulb should light up with a warm white glow, indicating it has power and is ready to be discovered by the Bridge.
Step 3: Add the Bulb in the Hue App
- Open the Philips Hue app on your phone.
- Navigate to Settings and then tap Lights.
- Tap Add Light and then Search.
- The app will scan for new Zigbee devices. Within a minute, the Hue White A19 should appear in the list of discovered lights.
- Tap the bulb to add it to your system.
If the bulb does not appear, make sure it is powered on and within Zigbee range of the Bridge or another Hue bulb that can relay the signal through the mesh network.
Step 4: Assign the Bulb to a Room
After the bulb is added, the app will prompt you to assign it to a room. Choose an existing room or create a new one by tapping Create Room. Select a room type such as Bedroom, Kitchen, or Hallway. Assigning bulbs to rooms lets you control all the lights in a space with a single tap and enables room-based voice commands.
Step 5: Test Brightness Control
Go to the Home tab in the app, tap on the room you assigned the bulb to, and try adjusting the brightness slider. The Hue White A19 supports smooth dimming from 1% to 100% without requiring a physical dimmer switch. This is especially useful for creating a relaxed atmosphere at night or full brightness for tasks.
Step 6: Create Automations
Take advantage of the Hue app's automation features to make your new bulb work for you automatically:
- Wake-up routine: Gradually brighten the bulb over 30 minutes to simulate a sunrise.
- Away-from-home: Randomly turn the bulb on and off while you are away to deter intruders.
- Bedtime timer: Automatically dim and turn off the bulb at a set time each night.
- Geofencing: Have the bulb turn on when you arrive home and off when you leave.
Important Tips
- Always leave the physical wall switch in the on position. If the switch is off, the bulb loses power and cannot respond to app or voice commands.
- The Hue White A19 does not support color or color temperature adjustment. It produces a fixed warm white tone at 2700K. If you want tunable white or color, consider the Hue White Ambiance or White and Color Ambiance versions.
- This bulb produces 800 lumens, equivalent to a traditional 60W incandescent bulb, while consuming only about 9W of power.
- Each Hue Bridge supports up to 50 lights, so you can expand your system over time without needing additional hardware.
