What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue White Ambiance Lightstrip (2m)
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A clean, dry surface for mounting
  • Rubbing alcohol or surface cleaner
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • Scissors (if you need to cut the strip to length)

Understanding the White Ambiance Lightstrip

The Hue White Ambiance Lightstrip provides tunable white light from 2200K warm candlelight to 6500K cool daylight. Unlike the White and Color Lightstrip Plus, it does not support colored light. However, it produces excellent white light quality, making it ideal for practical installations where color is unnecessary but adjustable white tones are valuable, such as under kitchen cabinets, inside closets, or along task areas.

Step 1: Plan Your Installation

Decide where the lightstrip will go and measure the surface. The strip is 2 meters long and can be cut at designated cut marks if it is too long. Great installation locations include:

  • Under kitchen cabinets for countertop task lighting
  • Inside wardrobes or closets
  • Along bathroom vanity mirrors
  • Under desks for workspace lighting
  • Along bookshelves or display cabinets

Step 2: Prepare the Mounting Surface

Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grease, dust, and residue. The adhesive backing bonds best to smooth, non-porous surfaces. Let the surface dry completely before applying the strip.

Step 3: Cut to Length If Needed

The strip has clearly marked cut lines at regular intervals. Use sharp scissors to cut at these marks only. Cutting between marks will damage the circuitry and cause a section to stop working. Once cut, the removed section cannot be reconnected.

Step 4: Connect and Mount

  1. Plug the lightstrip into the controller unit.
  2. Connect the power adapter to the controller and plug it into a wall outlet.
  3. Verify the strip lights up before mounting.
  4. Peel the adhesive backing gradually and press the strip firmly onto the prepared surface, working from the controller end.

Step 5: Pair with Your Hue Bridge

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light and wait for the app to discover the strip.
  3. Tap the White Ambiance Lightstrip to pair it.
  4. Assign it to the appropriate room.

Step 6: Set Up White Temperature Schedules

The biggest advantage of the White Ambiance version is its ability to shift between warm and cool tones throughout the day. Set up automations in the Hue app to match natural daylight patterns:

  • Morning (6:00-9:00 AM): Cool white at 5000K and high brightness to help you wake up and feel energized.
  • Midday (9:00 AM-4:00 PM): Neutral white at 4000K for balanced, productive lighting.
  • Evening (4:00-9:00 PM): Warm white at 2700K for a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.
  • Night (9:00 PM+): Very warm at 2200K and low brightness to promote relaxation and better sleep.

Step 7: Pair with a Dimmer Switch (Optional)

If the lightstrip is installed in a location like a kitchen or bathroom, consider pairing it with a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch. Mount the switch near the lightstrip's location for quick physical control. The dimmer can cycle through four scenes with its button, letting you switch between bright task lighting and warm ambient modes without opening the app.

Tips

  • The White Ambiance Lightstrip produces up to 1600 lumens over 2 meters, making it bright enough for practical task lighting.
  • For under-cabinet installation, mount the strip toward the front edge of the cabinet (closest to you) for the best countertop illumination.
  • If the adhesive weakens over time, use LED strip mounting clips or aluminum channels for a permanent solution.
  • This strip is indoor use only. For outdoor installations, use the Hue Outdoor Lightstrip instead.
  • Avoid routing the strip near heat sources like stoves or radiators, as excessive heat can reduce LED lifespan.
