What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue White and Color E12 Candelabra Bulb
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A light fixture with an E12 candelabra socket (chandeliers, wall sconces, decorative lamps)
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • A Wi-Fi connection on the same network as your Hue Bridge

Step 1: Verify Your Hue Bridge Is Online

Open the Philips Hue app and confirm that your Bridge is connected. The E12 candelabra bulb communicates with the Bridge using the Zigbee protocol, not Wi-Fi. If you have not yet set up a Bridge, complete that setup before installing this bulb.

Step 2: Identify Your E12 Fixture

The E12 candelabra base is a smaller screw-in socket most commonly found in chandeliers, wall sconces, ceiling fan light kits, and decorative accent lamps. It is significantly smaller than the standard E26 base. If you are unsure whether your fixture uses E12, check the existing bulb. E12 bulbs are typically narrow, flame-shaped or torpedo-shaped, and roughly the diameter of a nickel at the base.

Step 3: Install the Bulb

  1. Turn off the fixture at the wall switch. If it is a chandelier, consider also turning off the circuit breaker for safety when working overhead.
  2. Remove the existing E12 bulb by unscrewing it counterclockwise.
  3. Screw in the Philips Hue E12 candelabra bulb gently until snug.
  4. Turn the switch back on.

The bulb will light up with a warm white glow. If you are installing multiple E12 bulbs in a chandelier, replace all of them at this point so you can discover them all at once in the app.

Step 4: Add the Bulbs in the Hue App

  1. Open the Hue app and go to Settings, then Lights.
  2. Tap Add Light and let the app search for new devices.
  3. Each E12 bulb will appear individually. Tap each one to add it to your Bridge.
  4. Assign all bulbs to the same room where the fixture is located.

Step 5: Set Up Chandelier Scenes

A chandelier with multiple smart E12 bulbs opens up creative lighting possibilities. Here are some scene ideas:

  • Candlelight Dinner: Set all bulbs to 2200K at 20% brightness for a warm, intimate dining atmosphere.
  • Party Mode: Assign each bulb a different color from the spectrum for a festive rainbow effect.
  • Bright White: Set all bulbs to 4000K at full brightness for bright, functional lighting during daytime.
  • Movie Night: Dim all bulbs to 5% with a warm amber tone so the chandelier provides just enough ambient light without competing with the screen.

Create these scenes in the Hue app by going to the room, tapping Scenes, and setting each bulb individually.

Step 6: Configure Automations

Chandeliers and sconces in entryways and dining rooms are excellent candidates for automation. Set up routines to turn on the chandelier at a welcoming brightness when you arrive home, dim it to a warm glow during dinner time, and turn it off automatically at bedtime.

Tips

  • The E12 candelabra bulb produces approximately 470 lumens, equivalent to a 40W incandescent candelabra bulb.
  • It supports the full 16 million color range plus tunable white from 2000K to 6500K.
  • Leave the wall switch or dimmer in the on position at all times. If your chandelier is on a physical dimmer, set it to maximum and use the Hue app for dimming instead. Physical dimmers can cause flickering with smart bulbs.
  • For chandeliers with many bulbs, consider the impact on your Hue Bridge's 50-light limit. A six-bulb chandelier uses six of those slots.
  • When controlling a chandelier with voice, saying "Set the dining room to 50 percent" is easier than naming each bulb individually. This is why assigning all bulbs to the same room matters.
