What You Will Need
- Sonos Era 100 and included power cord
- A smartphone or tablet with the Sonos app (S2 version) installed on Android or iOS
- A Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)
- A flat, stable surface for placement
- Optionally, a Sonos Line-In Adapter (USB-C) for wired audio input or a Sonos Combo Adapter for Ethernet connectivity
Choosing the Ideal Location
The Sonos Era 100 features two angled tweeters and a mid-woofer that create a wide, room-filling stereo soundstage from a single compact speaker. Place it on a shelf, desk, or nightstand where you can take full advantage of its stereo separation. For best results, position the speaker at ear level and keep at least two inches of clearance from the rear wall. The Era 100 is not water-resistant, so avoid bathrooms and outdoor areas unless placed under complete shelter.
Powering Up and Connecting
- Place the Sonos Era 100 on your desired surface and plug in the included power cord.
- The LED light on the front of the speaker will pulse orange, indicating it is ready for setup.
- Open the Sonos app on your phone. If you are new to Sonos, create a Sonos account first.
- The app should detect the Era 100 automatically. If it does not, tap the + icon or navigate to Settings > System > Add Product.
- When prompted, connect using Wi-Fi. The Era 100 also supports Bluetooth for quick pairing, but Wi-Fi provides better audio quality and access to the full range of Sonos features.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. The speaker will connect and automatically check for firmware updates.
- Assign the Era 100 to a room. You can select a preset room name or create a custom one. This name is important for voice control and multi-room grouping.
Running Trueplay Tuning
The Era 100 supports two forms of Trueplay tuning, making it the most flexible Sonos speaker for room calibration.
- Quick Tuning (all devices): The Era 100 has built-in microphones that can perform a basic room calibration automatically. In the Sonos app, go to Settings > System > [Your Era 100] > Trueplay and select Quick Tuning. The speaker will play test tones and use its own microphones to optimize sound. This takes about 30 seconds.
- Advanced Tuning (iPhone/iPad only): For more precise calibration, select Advanced Tuning in the same menu. This uses your iPhone or iPad's microphone as you walk around the room while the speaker plays test tones. It takes about 45 seconds and produces a more detailed acoustic profile.
- Tap Save after either tuning process completes. Re-tune whenever you move the speaker or significantly change the room's layout.
Setting Up Voice Control
- The Era 100 supports Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control. Google Assistant is not available on Era series speakers.
- In the Sonos app, go to Settings > Services & Voice and select your preferred voice assistant.
- Follow the account linking steps. For Alexa, you will need to sign in with your Amazon account and enable the Sonos skill.
- Once configured, use voice commands to play music, adjust volume, check the weather, and control compatible smart home devices.
- The microphone can be toggled on and off using the button on the back of the speaker. When muted, a visible indicator confirms the microphone is inactive.
Using Bluetooth
The Era 100 supports Bluetooth 5.0 for direct audio streaming from any Bluetooth-enabled device.
- Press and hold the Bluetooth button on the back of the Era 100 until the LED flashes blue.
- On your phone, tablet, or laptop, open Bluetooth settings and select the Era 100 from the list of available devices.
- Once paired, audio will stream directly to the speaker without needing Wi-Fi. Note that Bluetooth mode does not support multi-room grouping or Sonos app controls.
Tips for Getting Started
- Pair two Era 100 speakers for a dedicated stereo pair by going to System > [Room] > Create Stereo Pair in the Sonos app.
- Use AirPlay 2 to stream audio from Apple devices directly to the Era 100 without the Sonos app.
- Connect a turntable or other audio source using the optional Sonos Line-In Adapter (USB-C), sold separately.
- Add music services like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, or YouTube Music through Settings > Services & Voice > Music & Content in the Sonos app.
