What You'll Need
- Sonos Five
- Sonos app (iOS or Android)
- Wi-Fi network or Ethernet cable
- A sturdy surface (this speaker has some weight to it)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Position the Sonos Five. It can sit horizontally for stereo spread or vertically if you need a narrower footprint. The speaker detects its orientation and adjusts the EQ automatically.
- Connect power and optionally plug in an Ethernet cable if your router is nearby. A wired connection gives the most reliable performance, especially for high-res audio.
- Download or open the Sonos app and sign in.
- Add the speaker:
- Tap "Add" and select Five
- If using Ethernet, the speaker is discovered instantly. For Wi-Fi, enter your network credentials.
- Assign a room name.
- Run Trueplay tuning. This is especially worthwhile on the Five since the six-driver array benefits a lot from room calibration. Walk around the room with your phone while the test tones play (iOS) or let Quick Tuning handle it on Android.
- Optional: Create a stereo pair with a second Sonos Five for a seriously wide soundstage.
Placement and Sound Tips
The Sonos Five packs six drivers: three tweeters and three mid-woofers. In horizontal orientation, it produces a wide stereo image from a single unit, which makes it a great standalone speaker for a living room or large office. In vertical mode, it outputs mono but takes up less shelf space.
Place it on a solid surface. The Five is heavy enough that vibrations are not an issue, but a flimsy shelf might resonate at higher volumes. Keep it at least a few inches from the wall for cleaner bass response. Running Trueplay after placing it will tighten up the sound considerably.
If you have a turntable or CD player, the Five has a 3.5mm line-in jack on the back. This lets you pipe any external audio source through the Sonos system. Once connected, select "Line-in" as the source in the Sonos app for that room.
Stereo Pair and Multi-Room
A stereo pair of Sonos Fives is one of the best wireless music setups you can put together. Both units need to be the same model and assigned to the same room. In the Sonos app, go to Settings for the room and select "Create Stereo Pair." Place the two speakers 4 to 8 feet apart, each angled slightly toward your listening position.
The Five also groups with any other Sonos speaker for multi-room audio. Combine it with cheaper speakers like the Sonos One or Era 100 in other rooms, and play the same track everywhere simultaneously.
Troubleshooting
- Line-in audio not playing: Make sure you select "Line-In" as the source in the Sonos app for the Five's room. The speaker does not auto-detect when something is plugged in.
- Stereo pair sounds unbalanced: Both speakers need to be the same model and roughly the same distance from your listening spot. Re-run Trueplay after creating the pair to let the system calibrate both units together.
- Audio drops or buffers: If you are on Wi-Fi, try connecting one Sonos speaker to your router via Ethernet. This creates a dedicated Sonos network that reduces Wi-Fi congestion for the rest of the system. The Five has an Ethernet port on the back, making it a good candidate for this.
- Orientation not detected correctly: The Five may take a moment to switch EQ settings after you change its orientation. If it still sounds off, restart the speaker by unplugging it for 10 seconds.
- Factory reset: Unplug the speaker. Press and hold the Connect button on the back while plugging the power back in. Keep holding until the LED flashes amber and white, then release.
