What's in the Box
The TP-Link Kasa Smart Bulb KL125 Color package includes one multicolor smart LED bulb and a quick start guide. The KL125 uses an A19 form factor with an E26 screw base, compatible with most standard light sockets. Like other Kasa bulbs, the KL125 connects directly to your home WiFi network without the need for a separate smart home hub or bridge.
Prerequisites
Before starting the setup, confirm you have the following:
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the KL125 does not support 5 GHz)
- A smartphone with the Kasa Smart app installed from the App Store or Google Play
- A TP-Link account created within the Kasa app
- A working light socket with the switch left in the ON position
Step-by-Step Setup
- Screw the KL125 into a standard E26 light socket and flip the switch on. The bulb should glow a soft color and may blink briefly, indicating that it is ready for pairing.
- Open the Kasa Smart app and tap the "+" button to add a device. Choose "Smart Bulbs" and then select the KL125 from the available models.
- Make sure your phone is connected to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. The app will scan for the bulb's temporary WiFi signal and guide you through the connection process.
- When prompted, select your home WiFi network and enter the password. The bulb will connect and register with the Kasa cloud service, which typically takes 15 to 30 seconds.
- Give the bulb a descriptive name like "Bedroom Lamp" or "Desk Light" and assign it to the appropriate room within the app for easy control later.
App Pairing and Configuration
Once connected, the Kasa app gives you full control over the KL125's features. You can adjust the brightness from dim to full output, select any color from the RGB color wheel, or choose a white tone ranging from warm to daylight. Set up schedules to automatically turn the bulb on and off at specific times, or use the "Away Mode" to randomly toggle the light while you are on vacation to make it look like someone is home. You can also create custom scenes that save your preferred color and brightness combination for quick access.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The KL125 integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free voice control. To connect with Alexa, open the Alexa app, search for the "Kasa Smart" skill, enable it, and link your TP-Link account. For Google Assistant, add the Kasa integration through the Google Home app under "Works with Google." Once linked, you can use voice commands like "Alexa, set the desk light to blue" or "Hey Google, dim the bedroom to 50 percent." Group multiple Kasa devices into rooms for unified control. The KL125 also supports IFTTT for custom automations such as flashing the light when you receive an important email or changing colors based on the weather forecast.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the bulb does not show up in the Kasa app during setup, reset it by toggling the light switch off and on three times with roughly one-second intervals between each toggle. The bulb will blink rapidly to confirm it has been reset. Ensure your phone is not connected to a 5 GHz WiFi band during setup, as the bulb only communicates over 2.4 GHz. If the bulb connects but becomes unresponsive later, check that your router has not changed channels or that the bulb is still within reliable WiFi range. A WiFi extender can help if the bulb is in a distant room.
