What's in the Box
The TP-Link Kasa Smart Bulb KL130 Color package includes one multicolor smart LED bulb and a quick start guide. The KL130 is an A19 form factor bulb with an E26 base, which fits standard light sockets found in most lamps and fixtures in North America. No hub or additional hardware is required because the bulb connects directly to your WiFi network.
Prerequisites
Before you start the setup process, make sure you have the following ready:
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the KL130 does not support 5 GHz bands)
- A smartphone or tablet with the Kasa Smart app installed (available for iOS and Android)
- A TP-Link account, which you can register within the Kasa app
- A compatible light socket that is switched to the ON position
Step-by-Step Setup
- Screw the KL130 bulb into a standard E26 light socket and turn the light switch or lamp on. The bulb will light up and begin pulsing or cycling through colors briefly, indicating it is in pairing mode.
- Open the Kasa Smart app on your phone and tap the "+" icon to add a new device. Select "Smart Bulbs" from the device category list, then choose the KL130.
- The app will search for the bulb. Make sure your phone is connected to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network during this step. If your router uses a combined network name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, you may need to stand farther from the router to force a 2.4 GHz connection.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the bulb to your WiFi network. You will need to enter your WiFi password. The bulb will take about 15 to 30 seconds to connect.
- Once connected, name your bulb and assign it to a room in the app. This helps with organization, especially if you plan to add more smart bulbs later.
App Pairing and Configuration
After the bulb is set up, explore the full range of the KL130's features in the Kasa app. You can adjust brightness from 1 to 100 percent, change the color temperature for white light from a warm 2500K to a cool 9000K, or pick any color from the full RGB spectrum using the color wheel. Schedules let you automate the bulb to turn on at sunset and off at bedtime. The "Circadian Mode" feature gradually adjusts the color temperature throughout the day to match natural daylight patterns, which can help with sleep and productivity.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The KL130 works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana without needing a separate hub. In the Alexa app, enable the "Kasa Smart" skill and link your TP-Link account to control the bulb by voice. With Google Home, add the Kasa integration under "Works with Google" in the Google Home app. You can group multiple Kasa bulbs into rooms so a single voice command like "Alexa, turn off the living room lights" controls them all at once. For more advanced automation, the bulb also works with IFTTT, allowing you to trigger lighting changes based on events like weather forecasts or your phone's GPS location.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the KL130 does not appear during setup, turn the light switch off and on three times in quick succession with about one second between each toggle. This resets the bulb to pairing mode. Make sure your phone is on the same 2.4 GHz network and that you are within range of the bulb. If you recently changed your WiFi password, you will need to reset the bulb and set it up again from scratch through the Kasa app.
