What's in the Box
The TP-Link Kasa Smart In-Wall USB Outlet package includes the in-wall outlet unit, a wall plate, wire nuts, and an installation guide. This outlet combines two standard AC smart outlets with two built-in USB-A charging ports, eliminating the need for bulky USB wall chargers. The AC outlets are individually controllable through the app, while the USB ports provide always-on charging. A neutral wire is required, and no hub is needed as the outlet connects directly to your WiFi network.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, verify the following:
- A neutral wire is present in the outlet box (typically a bundle of white wires)
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network with signal at the outlet location (5 GHz is not supported)
- The Kasa Smart app is installed on your phone (iOS or Android)
- A TP-Link account registered in the Kasa app
- A Phillips-head screwdriver and a non-contact voltage tester
- Comfort with household electrical work, or a licensed electrician on hand
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the outlet you are replacing. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm there is absolutely no power in the box before proceeding.
- Remove the old outlet cover plate, unscrew the mounting screws, and gently pull the outlet out of the box. Take a photo of the wiring for reference before disconnecting.
- Disconnect all wires from the existing outlet. Identify the line (hot) wire (black), neutral (white), and ground (green or bare copper).
- Connect the Kasa Smart In-Wall USB Outlet: attach the black wire to line, white wire to neutral, and green wire to ground using the included wire nuts. Follow the wiring diagram in the installation guide, especially if your box has downstream load wires feeding additional outlets.
- Push the wires carefully into the box, mount the new outlet with screws, and attach the included wall plate.
- Turn the circuit breaker back on. The outlet's LED indicators should light up, confirming power and readiness for setup.
App Pairing and Configuration
Open the Kasa Smart app, tap "+," and add the in-wall USB outlet from the "Smart Outlets" category. Connect it to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network by following the on-screen prompts. Once paired, the two AC outlets appear as individually controllable devices in the app. Name them based on what is plugged in, such as "Desk Lamp" and "Fan." Set schedules to automate each outlet — turn the lamp on at sunset and the fan off at bedtime. The USB ports are always on and not app-controllable, making them perfect for phone and tablet charging. Countdown timers and Away Mode add scheduling flexibility and security features for each outlet.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The outlet works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Each AC outlet registers as a separate device, so voice commands like "Alexa, turn off the fan" or "Hey Google, turn on the desk lamp" control individual outlets. Add the outlets to voice assistant routines for multi-device control — a "Work Mode" routine could turn on the desk lamp and monitor power while activating a focus playlist on a smart speaker. The outlet is also IFTTT compatible for custom automations triggered by location, time, or other connected apps and services.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the outlet does not power on after installation, the most likely cause is a loose neutral wire connection. Double-check all wire nut connections and ensure the neutral is securely attached. If the outlet powers on but will not pair with WiFi, hold the reset button for 5 seconds and try the setup again on a confirmed 2.4 GHz network. If the USB ports are not charging devices, verify the outlet has power — the USB ports draw from the same circuit. If one AC outlet works through the app but the other does not, try the physical button on the outlet face and check your Kasa app for firmware updates that may resolve control issues.
