What's in the Box

Before you begin setting up your TP-Link Tapo C120, make sure you have everything that came in the package. Inside the box, you should find the Tapo C120 camera unit, a USB power adapter with a micro-USB cable (approximately 10 feet long), a mounting bracket with screws and wall anchors, a positioning sticker for drilling, and a quick start guide. The C120 is rated IP66 for weather resistance, so it works both indoors and outdoors without needing an additional housing.

Prerequisites

To get started, you will need a few things ready ahead of time:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the C120 does not support 5 GHz)
  • A smartphone with the Tapo app installed (available on iOS and Android)
  • A TP-Link ID — you can create one for free within the Tapo app
  • A stable WiFi signal at the location where you plan to mount the camera
  • A power outlet within reach of the included cable, or an outdoor-rated extension cord if mounting outside

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plug the USB power adapter into an outlet and connect the micro-USB cable to the camera. Wait about 30 seconds until the LED indicator on the camera starts blinking green and red, which means it is in pairing mode.
  2. Open the Tapo app on your phone and tap the "+" icon in the top-right corner to add a new device. Select "Smart Cameras" and then choose the Tapo C120 from the list.
  3. The app will prompt you to confirm that the camera LED is blinking green and red. Tap "Next" to continue.
  4. Your phone will connect to the camera's temporary WiFi hotspot. On some phones, you may need to manually join this network from your WiFi settings if the app does not connect automatically.
  5. Select your home 2.4 GHz WiFi network from the list and enter the password. The camera will take about 30 seconds to connect.
  6. Once connected, give your camera a name and assign it to a room. You can also insert a microSD card (up to 512 GB) into the camera's card slot for local recording before or after mounting.

App Pairing and Configuration

After the camera is connected to your WiFi network, the Tapo app will walk you through basic settings. You can enable motion detection and set activity zones so the camera only alerts you when movement is detected in specific areas. The C120 supports Tapo Care cloud storage subscriptions, but local storage via microSD card works without any subscription. You can also enable the camera's built-in spotlight and siren for security alerts, and adjust the starlight night vision sensitivity from the camera settings menu.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The Tapo C120 works with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands and live view on smart displays. To set this up, open the Alexa or Google Home app, search for the "Tapo" skill or integration, and link your TP-Link account. Once linked, you can say "Alexa, show me the front door camera" or "Hey Google, stream the backyard camera" to pull up a live feed on compatible displays like the Echo Show or Nest Hub. Note that Apple HomeKit is not natively supported on the C120.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the camera does not enter pairing mode, press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the camera for about five seconds until the LED blinks green and red. Make sure your phone is close to the camera during setup and that you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz network, not a 5 GHz one. If your router broadcasts a combined network, you may need to temporarily separate the bands or move farther from the router so your phone defaults to 2.4 GHz.
