What's in the Box

The TP-Link Tapo L930E Matter Light Strip package includes a multicolor LED light strip, a power adapter, a WiFi controller, adhesive 3M backing pre-applied to the strip, mounting clips with screws, and a quick start guide with a Matter QR code. The L930E supports Matter, making it compatible with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings natively. The strip features multizone color capabilities so you can display different colors along its length simultaneously.

Prerequisites

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the L930E does not support 5 GHz)
  • A Matter-compatible controller — Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo (4th gen+), Google Nest Hub (2nd gen+), or SmartThings hub
  • A smartphone with the Tapo app or a Matter-compatible smart home app installed
  • A power outlet near the installation area
  • A clean, dry mounting surface for the adhesive strip
  • A TP-Link ID if using the Tapo app for setup

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Plan your layout before peeling the adhesive. Measure the installation area and decide where the controller and power adapter will sit. The strip can be cut at designated cut lines if needed, but cut sections cannot be reconnected.
  2. Connect the light strip to the controller unit and plug the power adapter into a wall outlet. The strip will light up and the controller LED will blink, indicating pairing mode.
  3. For Tapo app setup: open the app, tap "+," select "Light Strips," and choose the L930E. Follow the prompts to connect to your WiFi and register the strip.
  4. For direct Matter setup: open Apple Home, Google Home, or another Matter app. Select "Add Device" and scan the Matter QR code from the packaging or quick start guide. The app will discover and configure the strip over your local WiFi network.
  5. Name the light strip and assign it to a room. If you set it up through Tapo first, you can commission it to additional Matter platforms from the device's Matter settings.
  6. Peel the 3M adhesive backing and press the strip firmly onto your surface, starting from the controller end. Use mounting clips at corners or curves for extra hold.

App Pairing and Configuration

The Tapo app provides the most comprehensive control, including multizone color painting, animated lighting effects, music sync mode, and custom scene creation. You can assign different colors to individual zones along the strip, choose from dozens of preset effects, or create your own. Schedules and countdown timers automate the strip based on your daily routine. When controlled through Apple Home or Google Home, you get single-color control, brightness adjustment, and platform-native automations. The multizone effects are best managed through the Tapo app, while basic on/off, color, and brightness work well across all Matter platforms.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The L930E's Matter support opens it up to Apple HomeKit users who can control it with Siri and HomeKit automations for the first time. Create a HomeKit scene that sets the strip to a warm dim glow when you say "Hey Siri, movie time." In Google Home, include it in routines. In Alexa, use it in scenes and voice commands. Because Matter supports multi-admin, the strip can belong to multiple platforms simultaneously — Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa can all control it without conflicts. This is particularly useful in households where family members use different ecosystems. Combine the strip with other Matter devices for cross-platform automations that work regardless of brand.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the strip does not enter pairing mode, press and hold the reset button on the controller for 5 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly. If Matter pairing fails, ensure your Matter controller firmware is up to date — Matter compatibility improves with each update. Verify that your phone and the Matter controller are on the same WiFi network. If the QR code does not scan, enter the numeric pairing code manually. If the strip works in the Tapo app but does not appear in other platforms, use the Tapo app to commission it to additional Matter controllers from the device settings. If adhesive does not hold on textured surfaces, use the included mounting clips and screws for a more reliable installation. Avoid sharp bends that can damage the LEDs and cause sections to malfunction or display incorrect colors.
