What You'll Need
- TP-Link Tapo S500D Smart Dimmer Switch
- Screwdriver
- Wire stripper/cutter
- Voltage tester
- Smartphone with Tapo app
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Neutral wire (required)
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off before proceeding.
Step 2: Remove Existing Switch
Remove the cover plate and unscrew the existing switch from the electrical box. Note the wire connections before disconnecting.
Step 3: Identify Wires
Identify your wires: Line (hot/power), Load (to fixture), Neutral (white), and Ground (green or bare copper). A neutral wire is required for this switch.
Step 4: Connect Wires
Connect the switch wires to your home wiring: Line to Line, Load to Load, Neutral to Neutral, Ground to Ground. Use wire nuts or push connectors to secure connections.
Step 5: Mount the Switch
Carefully push wires into the box and secure the switch with screws. Install the cover plate.
Step 6: Restore Power
Turn the breaker back on. The switch LED should illuminate indicating power.
Step 7: Set Up in App
Download the Tapo app. Create an account and tap "+" to add a device. Follow prompts to connect the switch to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
