What's in the Box

The TP-Link Tapo Smart LED Light Strip L930-5 comes with a 16.4-foot (5-meter) RGBIC LED light strip, a power adapter, a controller with built-in WiFi, adhesive backing pre-applied to the strip, mounting clips with screws, and a quick start guide. The L930-5 features multizone color technology with 50 individually addressable color zones, allowing for complex gradient and animated lighting effects across the full length of the strip.

Prerequisites

Before you begin the installation, gather the following:

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network (the L930-5 does not support 5 GHz)
  • A smartphone with the Tapo app installed (available on iOS and Android)
  • A TP-Link ID created within the Tapo app
  • A power outlet accessible from your installation area
  • A clean, smooth surface for mounting — wipe the surface with a dry cloth before applying the adhesive strip

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Decide on placement before removing the adhesive backing. Measure the area where you plan to install the strip. The L930-5 spans 16.4 feet and can be trimmed at marked cut lines, but cut segments cannot be reused or reconnected.
  2. Attach the light strip to the controller unit using the connector. Plug the power adapter into the controller and connect it to a wall outlet.
  3. The strip should light up and the controller LED will blink green and red, indicating pairing mode. If the LED does not blink, press and hold the reset button on the controller for about 5 seconds.
  4. Open the Tapo app, tap the "+" icon, and select "Light Strips" from the device categories. Choose the L930-5 and follow the on-screen instructions to pair it with your WiFi network.
  5. Enter your WiFi network name and password when prompted. The strip will take about 20 to 30 seconds to connect to your network and register with the Tapo cloud.
  6. Once connected, peel off the adhesive backing and press the strip firmly onto the surface. Start from the controller end and work your way along, keeping the strip straight. Use the included mounting clips at curves or corners for extra support.

App Pairing and Configuration

The Tapo app provides access to all 50 color zones on the L930-5. You can paint individual zones with different colors, select from dozens of preset lighting effects like "Aurora," "Rainbow," and "Fireplace," or create your own custom effects. The music sync feature uses your phone's microphone to pulse the lights in time with music, making it great for parties. Set schedules and timers so the strip turns on and off automatically, and adjust brightness and color temperature when using white light mode. The L930-5 also supports grouping with other Tapo devices for synchronized control.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The L930-5 is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Link your TP-Link account through the Alexa or Google Home app to use voice commands such as "Alexa, set the TV backlight to purple" or "Hey Google, turn on the bedroom lights." For basic control like on, off, brightness, and single colors, voice commands work well. For multizone effects and animations, use the Tapo app directly. If you have a Matter-compatible smart home hub, check for firmware updates as TP-Link has been rolling out Matter support to select Tapo devices.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the strip does not enter pairing mode, hold the reset button on the controller for 5 to 10 seconds until the LED blinks green and red. Make sure the connection between the strip and controller is secure and fully plugged in. If the strip is detected but fails to connect to WiFi, double-check that you are entering the 2.4 GHz network password correctly and that your router is not blocking new devices. If sections of the strip appear dim or discolored after installation, ensure there are no sharp bends or pinch points along the strip that could damage the internal LEDs.
