What's in the Box
The TP-Link Tapo Smart Light Switch S505 package includes the smart switch unit, a wall plate (faceplate), wire nuts, and an installation guide. The S505 is a single-pole on/off smart switch — it does not support dimming. It replaces a standard wall light switch and connects to your WiFi network without needing a hub. A neutral wire is required in the switch box for installation. The switch uses the Tapo app for setup and control.
Prerequisites
Before you start the installation, confirm the following:
- A neutral wire exists in the switch box (usually a bundle of white wires connected together)
- The switch you are replacing is a single-pole switch (one switch controls one light or fixture)
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network is available at the switch location (5 GHz is not supported)
- The Tapo app is installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
- A TP-Link ID is registered within the Tapo app
- A Phillips-head screwdriver and non-contact voltage tester are on hand
- You are comfortable with basic electrical wiring, or a licensed electrician is available
Step-by-Step Installation
- Turn off the circuit breaker for the switch you plan to replace. Confirm there is no power at the switch box by testing with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires.
- Remove the existing wall plate and unscrew the old switch from the electrical box. Pull the switch forward and take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting any wires.
- Disconnect the wires and identify them: line (hot from the breaker, typically black), load (goes to the light fixture, usually black or red), neutral (white, bundled together), and ground (green or bare copper).
- Connect the S505 according to the installation guide: attach the switch's wires to line, load, neutral, and ground respectively, securing each connection with the included wire nuts.
- Push the wires neatly into the box, screw the S505 into the mounting position, and attach the included wall plate.
- Turn the circuit breaker back on. The S505's LED indicator will light up to confirm power and readiness for app setup.
App Pairing and Configuration
Open the Tapo app, tap the "+" icon, and select "Smart Switches." Choose the S505 and follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network. Once paired, the app lets you toggle the switch on and off from anywhere. Set up daily or weekly schedules to automate lighting — turn the porch light on at sunset and off at sunrise, or turn the bathroom light off at midnight every night. Use countdown timers to automatically turn off a light after a set duration. The "Away Mode" feature randomly toggles the switch while you are on vacation to simulate activity. Group the S505 with other Tapo devices for one-tap control of multiple devices.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The S505 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Link your TP-Link account through the Alexa or Google Home app and use voice commands like "Alexa, turn off the hallway light" or "Hey Google, turn on the kitchen." The physical switch button continues to work normally for anyone who prefers manual control, making it household-friendly. Include the S505 in voice assistant routines for multi-device scenes — a "Good Morning" routine could turn on the kitchen light, start the coffee maker smart plug, and read the weather forecast. The S505 uses the Tapo ecosystem, so it will appear in the Tapo app alongside other Tapo devices but not in the Kasa app.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the S505 does not power on after installation, the most likely cause is a loose neutral wire connection. Check all wire nut connections and ensure they are tight and fully seated. Verify the circuit breaker is on and test the box with a voltage tester. If the switch has power but will not connect to WiFi, press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds until the LED blinks, then restart the pairing process in the Tapo app. Make sure your phone is on the 2.4 GHz band and within range of the switch during setup. If the switch connects but the light does not turn on, confirm the load wire is properly connected and that the light fixture itself is working by testing with a standard switch.
