What You'll Need

  • TP-Link Tapo S505 Smart Switch
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire stripper/cutter
  • Voltage tester
  • Smartphone with Tapo app
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Neutral wire (required)

Step 1: Turn Off Power

Switch off the circuit breaker controlling the switch. Verify with a voltage tester that no power is present.

Step 2: Remove Old Switch

Remove the wall plate and unscrew the existing switch. Document wire positions before disconnecting.

Step 3: Connect Wiring

Connect the Tapo switch wires: Line (black), Load (black), Neutral (white), Ground (green). Secure all connections with wire nuts.

Step 4: Install Switch

Push wires back into the box. Secure the switch and install the cover plate.

Step 5: Power On

Restore power at the breaker. The switch LED should indicate power.

Step 6: App Setup

Open the Tapo app, add a new device, and connect the switch to your Wi-Fi network following the in-app instructions.
