Placement and Sound Tips
The MusicCast 50 is Yamaha's larger wireless speaker, packing 70 watts of power through dual woofers and passive radiators. It fills a room easily and works well as the main music speaker in a living room, den, or large bedroom.
In horizontal orientation, the two woofers create a wider stereo image. In vertical mode, the speaker takes up less shelf space but outputs mono audio since the drivers are stacked. Most people prefer horizontal placement for the better soundstage.
Place it on a solid surface like a credenza, TV console, or sturdy shelf. Give it a few inches of space behind and on each side. The passive radiators on the sides need room to push air for deep bass. Placing it in a tight shelf cavity will muffle the low end.
The speaker has a 3.5mm aux input on the back for connecting external audio sources like a turntable or CD player. Note that this is a line-level input. If you are connecting a turntable, you need a model with a built-in preamp or a separate phono preamp between the turntable and the speaker.
Stereo Pair and Multi-Room
Two MusicCast 50 speakers can be paired for true stereo with dedicated left and right channels. Set this up in the MusicCast app. Place them 5 to 8 feet apart, each angled slightly toward the center of your listening area.
The MusicCast 50 also works as part of Yamaha's multi-room audio system. Group it with other MusicCast speakers to play synchronized music throughout your home. AirPlay 2 support lets you group it with Apple-compatible speakers from other brands as well.
Streaming and Connectivity
Beyond Wi-Fi, the MusicCast 50 supports Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect. It also plays high-res audio files streamed from a NAS or media server through the MusicCast app. If your Wi-Fi is unreliable, the speaker has an Ethernet adapter option for a wired connection, which provides the most stable streaming for lossless audio.
Troubleshooting
- Orientation not detected correctly: The automatic EQ adjustment may take a few seconds after changing the speaker's orientation. If it still sounds wrong, restart the speaker by unplugging it for 10 seconds.
- Aux input not playing: Make sure you select the line-in source in the MusicCast app. The speaker does not auto-switch when something is plugged in. If using a turntable, make sure it has a built-in preamp or you are using an external one.
- Network dropouts: For consistent streaming, especially with high-res audio, try a wired Ethernet connection through the included adapter. This eliminates Wi-Fi interference entirely.
- Speaker not found during setup: Hold the CONNECT button on the back for at least 5 seconds until the LED blinks. Make sure your phone has Wi-Fi turned on so it can connect to the speaker's temporary access point.
- Factory reset: Press and hold the CONNECT button while powering the speaker on. Keep holding until the LED flashes a reset pattern, then release. The speaker will return to factory defaults.
