What You Will Need
- Amazon Smart Thermostat
- Smartphone with the Alexa app installed
- Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz)
- An Amazon account
- Phillips screwdriver
- Wire labels (included)
- Trim plate (included, for covering gaps from your old thermostat)
- A compatible HVAC system (check compatibility at amazon.com/smartthermostat before purchasing)
Step 1: Check Compatibility and Turn Off Power
- Before beginning installation, confirm your HVAC system is compatible. The Amazon Smart Thermostat works with most 24V systems including forced air, heat pump, radiant, and oil or gas systems. It requires a C-wire (common wire) for power.
- Go to your circuit breaker or fuse box and turn off the power to your HVAC system. This is critical for safety.
- Go to your current thermostat and confirm power is off by checking that the display is blank or the system is not running.
Step 2: Remove Your Old Thermostat
- Remove the faceplate of your old thermostat to expose the wiring.
- Take a photo of the existing wiring for reference before disconnecting anything.
- Use the included wire labels to label each wire according to the terminal it is connected to (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.). This step is essential for correct installation.
- Disconnect the wires from the terminals by loosening the screws or pressing the release tabs.
- Remove the old thermostat's back plate from the wall by unscrewing it.
Step 3: Install the Amazon Smart Thermostat
- If there are gaps in the wall from the old thermostat, attach the included trim plate first to cover them.
- Thread the labeled wires through the center of the Smart Thermostat's back plate.
- Hold the back plate against the wall, use the built-in level bubble to ensure it is straight, and mark the screw holes.
- Drill pilot holes if necessary and screw the back plate to the wall using the included screws and wall anchors.
- Connect each labeled wire to the corresponding terminal on the back plate. Push each wire firmly into the terminal until it clicks. The terminals are clearly labeled R, Y, W, G, C, and others.
- Verify all wires are secure by giving each a gentle tug.
Step 4: Attach the Thermostat and Power On
- Align the thermostat display unit with the back plate and press it firmly until it snaps into place.
- Go to the circuit breaker and turn the power back on to your HVAC system.
- The thermostat screen will light up and display the Amazon logo, then enter setup mode.
Step 5: Set Up in the Alexa App
- Open the Alexa app and tap Devices > + > Add Device > Thermostat > Amazon.
- The app will find the thermostat. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz only).
- The app will guide you through configuring your HVAC system type. Select your heating and cooling system type based on the wires you connected.
- Test your system by running the heating test and cooling test from the app. Verify that warm or cool air comes from your vents within a few minutes.
Step 6: Configure Your Temperature Preferences
- Set your preferred temperature schedule in the Alexa app. You can create different temperatures for morning, daytime, evening, and night.
- Enable Hunches in the Alexa app to let Alexa automatically adjust the temperature based on your activity patterns and whether you are home or away.
- If you have an energy provider that participates in Amazon Energy Star rewards, enroll to receive rebates and allow slight temperature adjustments during peak energy demand.
Tips
- Say "Alexa, set the thermostat to 72" for quick voice-controlled temperature changes.
- If you do not have a C-wire, you may need to purchase a C-wire adapter kit separately. Some older homes lack this wire.
- The Amazon Smart Thermostat is powered by Honeywell Home technology, ensuring reliable HVAC compatibility.
- Create an Alexa Routine to automatically lower the temperature at bedtime and raise it before your morning alarm.
- The thermostat's simple display shows the current temperature and set point. All detailed scheduling and settings are managed through the Alexa app.
