The Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 EU (With Neutral) is a Zigbee-connected wall switch designed for European-style installations where a neutral wire is available in the switch box. Having a neutral wire provides more reliable operation and eliminates the minimum load requirement found in no-neutral versions. This guide covers the electrical installation and software setup.
What You Will Need
- Aqara Smart Wall Switch H1 EU (With Neutral)
- Aqara Hub (M2, M3, or Camera Hub G3) already set up on your network
- Aqara Home app installed on your smartphone (iOS or Android)
- Flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers
- Voltage tester or multimeter
- Wire strippers (if needed)
Important Safety Warning
Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the switch you are replacing before beginning any work. Use a voltage tester to confirm that no power is present at the switch box. If you are unfamiliar with electrical wiring, hire a qualified electrician to perform the installation.
Identifying Your Wires
The neutral-wire version of this switch requires three connections. Before removing your old switch, identify the wires in the switch box:
- Live wire (L) — The hot wire from your breaker panel, typically brown in EU wiring.
- Neutral wire (N) — The return wire, typically blue in EU wiring. This may be bundled together with other neutral wires in the back of the box.
- Load wire (L1/L2) — The wire going to your light fixture, which may vary in color.
- Ground wire — Green and yellow striped, connected to the ground terminal.
Removing the Existing Switch
- With the breaker confirmed off, remove the existing switch's faceplate.
- Unscrew the switch from the wall box and carefully pull it forward to expose the wiring.
- Note which wires connect to which terminals. Take a photo for reference if needed.
- Disconnect all wires from the old switch.
Wiring the Aqara Switch
- Locate the terminals on the back of the Aqara switch: L (live), N (neutral), L1 (load 1), and if applicable, L2 (load 2 for the double-rocker version).
- Connect the live wire to the L terminal.
- Connect the neutral wire to the N terminal. If the neutral wires in the box are joined together, add a short pigtail wire from that bundle to the switch's N terminal.
- Connect the load wire to the L1 terminal. For the double-rocker version, connect the second load wire to L2.
- Connect the ground wire to the appropriate terminal.
- Carefully push the wires into the box and mount the switch with the included screws.
- Attach the faceplate.
Powering On and Pairing
- Turn the circuit breaker back on. The switch's LED indicator should illuminate.
- Open the Aqara Home app and tap the + icon.
- Select Smart Wall Switch H1 EU (With Neutral) from the device list.
- Choose the Aqara Hub you want to pair with.
- Press and hold the switch button for 5 seconds until the LED begins flashing rapidly.
- Wait for the app to discover and pair the switch. This usually takes 10 to 30 seconds.
- Assign the switch to a room and name it appropriately.
Configuring the Switch
After pairing, customize the switch behavior in the Aqara Home app:
- Power-on state — Set the default state after a power outage: previous state, always on, or always off.
- LED indicator — Choose when the LED light is visible.
- Decoupled mode — Separate the physical button from the relay to use the button purely as a wireless trigger for automations while keeping the connected light in a fixed state.
Advantages of the Neutral-Wire Version
- No minimum load requirement — works reliably with any LED bulb, even those rated under 3W.
- No flickering issues when the light is turned off.
- More stable Zigbee connection since the switch receives consistent power through the neutral wire.
- The switch doubles as a Zigbee router, extending your mesh network's range.
Tips
- This switch is designed for the EU market and fits standard European round or square wall boxes. Verify your wall box dimensions before purchasing.
- Test both physical button operation and app control after installation.
- Check for firmware updates in the Aqara Home app after pairing to ensure you have the latest features and fixes.
