What's in the Box
Your August Smart Lock Pro + Connect package includes the August Smart Lock Pro unit, the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge, a mounting plate, the DoorSense magnet sensor, multiple tailpiece adapters, a wing bracket adapter, CR123A batteries, adhesive strips, and a quick-start guide. The Connect bridge is what enables remote access and voice assistant control, so keep it handy for the second phase of setup.
Prerequisites
The August Smart Lock Pro is a retrofit lock designed to replace just the interior side of your existing single-cylinder deadbolt. Before starting, verify deadbolt compatibility — the lock works with most standard deadbolts but requires a specific backset measurement and tailpiece alignment. You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver and a smartphone with the August app (iOS or Android). For the Connect bridge, you will need a free power outlet within Bluetooth range of the lock (about 15–20 feet) and access to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
Step-by-Step Lock Installation
- Remove the interior thumbturn assembly of your existing deadbolt by unscrewing the two mounting bolts from the inside of your door. Leave the exterior key cylinder untouched.
- Secure the August mounting plate to the door using the existing screw holes. If the holes don't line up, attach the wing bracket adapter first, then mount the plate to it.
- Test the included tailpiece adapters by placing each one onto the deadbolt's tailpiece. Choose the one that fits snugly and turns the bolt smoothly without resistance.
- Align the August Smart Lock Pro onto the mounting plate and press it into position. Rotate the lock body until it snaps firmly onto the mount and the tailpiece engages.
- Attach the DoorSense magnet to the door frame at the same height as the lock unit. This magnet works with the built-in sensor to report whether your door is open or closed.
- Insert the CR123A batteries into the lock's battery compartment. The lock will light up and enter pairing mode.
Setting Up the August Connect Bridge
Plug the August Connect bridge into a power outlet within Bluetooth range of the lock. A green LED on the bridge indicates it is powered and ready. During the app setup process, the August app will detect the Connect bridge and walk you through linking it to your Wi-Fi network. The bridge acts as a translator between your lock's Bluetooth signal and your home Wi-Fi, enabling remote lock and unlock, activity monitoring from anywhere, and integration with voice assistants.
Pairing with the August App
Download and open the August app. Create an account or sign in, then tap "Set Up a Device" and select "Smart Lock Pro." Follow the on-screen prompts to pair via Bluetooth. Once the lock is paired, the app will prompt you to set up the Connect bridge for Wi-Fi connectivity. Enter your 2.4 GHz network credentials. After both devices are connected, calibrate the lock by following the in-app calibration wizard — this teaches the lock the exact positions of your deadbolt's locked and unlocked states.
Smart Home Integration Tips
With the Connect bridge online, your August Smart Lock Pro works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Z-Wave smart home hubs. For Z-Wave integration, the lock includes a built-in Z-Wave Plus radio — add it through your hub's device discovery. HomeKit pairing uses a code found in the August app. For Alexa and Google, link your August account through the respective assistant apps. The Z-Wave capability makes this lock especially versatile for users running SmartThings, Hubitat, or other Z-Wave controllers.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the Connect bridge LED blinks yellow, it has lost Wi-Fi connection — unplug it for ten seconds and try again. If the lock motor sounds strained, recalibrate through the August app or try a different tailpiece adapter. Ensure DoorSense is within one inch of the lock unit for accurate open/close detection.
