What's in the Box
Before you begin installing your August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen), verify that your package includes the following items: the August smart lock unit, a mounting plate, the DoorSense magnet, a wing bracket adapter, two AA batteries (pre-installed), adhesive strips, and the installation guide. If anything is missing, contact August support before proceeding.
Prerequisites
The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) is a retrofit lock, meaning it attaches to your existing single-cylinder deadbolt on the interior side of your door. Check that your deadbolt is compatible by measuring the backset distance and ensuring the tailpiece aligns properly. You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver and a smartphone with the August app installed (available on iOS and Android). Your home Wi-Fi network must be 2.4 GHz, as the lock's built-in Wi-Fi radio does not support 5 GHz networks.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove your existing interior deadbolt thumbturn assembly by unscrewing the two mounting screws on the inside of your door. Keep the exterior portion of the deadbolt in place.
- Attach the August mounting plate to the door using the existing screw holes. If the screws don't align, use the included wing bracket adapter for a secure fit.
- Slide the appropriate tailpiece adapter onto the lock's tailpiece. August includes multiple adapters to fit different deadbolt brands — test which one turns your bolt smoothly.
- Place the August lock body onto the mounting plate. Rotate it until it clicks securely into position and the tailpiece engages with the deadbolt mechanism.
- Install the DoorSense magnet on the door frame, aligned with the top of the lock unit. This sensor detects whether your door is open or closed.
- Pull the battery tab to activate the pre-installed AA batteries. The lock's LED ring will flash, indicating it is powered on and ready for pairing.
Pairing with the August App
Open the August app and create an account or sign in. Tap "Set Up a Device" and select "August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen)." The app will guide you through connecting via Bluetooth first, then configuring the built-in Wi-Fi. Enter your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network credentials when prompted. Once connected, the lock will receive a firmware update if one is available — let this complete before continuing. Name your lock and assign it to a location in the app.
Smart Home Integration Tips
The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) works natively with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. For Alexa, enable the August skill in the Alexa app and discover devices. For Google Assistant, link your August account through the Google Home app. HomeKit setup happens automatically during the August app pairing process. Because this lock has built-in Wi-Fi, you do not need the separate August Connect bridge for remote access or voice assistant integration — everything works directly through your home network.
Quick Troubleshooting
If the lock does not appear during Bluetooth pairing, ensure you are within three feet of the lock and that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. If Wi-Fi setup fails, confirm you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz network, not a 5 GHz band. Should the lock motor struggle to turn the deadbolt, try a different tailpiece adapter or check that the mounting plate is flush against the door. Recalibrating the lock through the August app can also resolve mechanical alignment issues.
