What You'll Need

  • ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced
  • ecobee app (iOS or Android)
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small labels or tape for wire marking
  • Power Extender Kit (included in the box)

Before You Start

Check your existing thermostat wiring before purchasing. The ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced works with most 24V HVAC systems, including conventional forced air (gas, oil, electric), heat pumps (with or without auxiliary heat), and dual-fuel systems. It does not work with high-voltage systems (120V/240V baseboard or line-voltage heaters), millivolt systems (some older gas fireplaces), or proprietary communicating systems from brands like Lennox or Carrier that use non-standard wiring.

C-Wire and Power Extender Kit

The ecobee requires a C-wire (common wire) for power. If your current thermostat only has four wires (R, G, Y, W) and no C-wire, use the included Power Extender Kit (PEK). The PEK installs at your furnace control board and repurposes one of your existing wires to deliver power. The ecobee app walks you through PEK installation step by step with diagrams for your specific wiring configuration.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn off HVAC power at the breaker. Flip the breaker labeled for your heating/cooling system. Verify the system is off by checking that your old thermostat goes blank or stops responding.
  2. Remove the existing thermostat faceplate. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything. Label each wire with the terminal letter it connects to (R, C, W, Y, G, O/B, etc.).
  3. Disconnect wires and remove the old wall plate. If you need to install the PEK, do that now at the furnace before continuing with the wall plate.
  4. Mount the ecobee backplate on the wall using the included screws. Use the built-in level to ensure it is straight. Thread the wires through the center opening.
  5. Connect wires to the matching terminals on the backplate. The ecobee uses screw terminals, so insert each wire and tighten the screw until snug. Double-check each connection matches your labels.
  6. Attach the thermostat display by pressing it firmly onto the backplate until it clicks.
  7. Turn power back on at the breaker.
  8. Complete the on-screen setup:
    • The ecobee touchscreen will guide you through configuration
    • Confirm your wiring and system type
    • Connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
    • Register your ecobee account in the app and pair the device

HVAC Compatibility Notes

The Enhanced model supports up to 2 stages of heating, 2 stages of cooling, and includes an accessory terminal for humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilators. For heat pump systems, make sure the O/B wire is connected and that you select the correct reversing valve setting (O for most heat pumps, B for Rheem/Ruud). If you have a dual-fuel system (heat pump plus gas furnace), the ecobee handles the switchover based on outdoor temperature thresholds you set in the app.

Smart Home Integration

The ecobee Enhanced works with Siri (Apple HomeKit), Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. For HomeKit, scan the setup code on the thermostat or in the box during Apple Home setup. Alexa integration connects through the ecobee skill. The ecobee also supports IFTTT for custom automations and has a solid API for Home Assistant users. If you add SmartSensors (sold separately), you can prioritize temperature readings in the rooms you use most.

Energy Saving Features

  • Smart Home/Away detection uses the built-in occupancy sensor and your phone's location to automatically switch between comfort and eco modes
  • Monthly energy reports in the app show heating and cooling runtime, comparisons to previous months, and personalized tips
  • Schedule optimization pre-heats or pre-cools your home so it reaches the target temperature right when you need it
  • Eco+ features include community energy savings and time-of-use optimization if your utility supports it

Troubleshooting

  • No power or blank screen: Verify the breaker is on and the C-wire is properly connected. If you installed the PEK, go back to the furnace and confirm all PEK wires are seated firmly in the control board. A loose wire at the furnace is the most common cause of no power.
  • Won't connect to Wi-Fi: The ecobee only supports 2.4GHz networks. If your router broadcasts a combined 2.4/5GHz network, the ecobee should find it, but if it fails, temporarily create a 2.4GHz-only SSID. Also make sure your Wi-Fi password does not contain unusual special characters that the touchscreen keyboard might handle incorrectly.
  • HVAC not responding to calls: Go to Main Menu, then Settings, then Installation Settings, then Test Equipment. Run each test individually. If the fan works but heating does not, check W1 wiring. For heat pumps, confirm the O/B setting matches your system.
  • Touchscreen unresponsive or frozen: Pull the thermostat off the backplate, wait 30 seconds, and reattach it. This performs a soft reboot. If the problem continues, check for firmware updates in the app.
  • Factory reset: Go to Main Menu, then Settings, then Reset, then Reset All Settings. This clears Wi-Fi, schedules, and preferences but does not erase your ecobee account.
