What You Will Need
- Eve Light Switch (Matter)
- Neutral wire in your switch box (required)
- iPhone or iPad with the Eve app installed
- Matter-compatible home hub (Apple TV, HomePod, or other Matter controller)
- WiFi network
- Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips)
- Voltage tester
- Wire nuts (included or available at hardware stores)
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Go to your electrical panel and turn off the breaker controlling the circuit for the light switch you are replacing. Use a voltage tester at the switch to confirm there is no live current before touching any wires. This step is critical for your safety when working with household electrical wiring.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Switch
- Remove the faceplate from the existing switch.
- Unscrew the switch from the electrical box.
- Carefully pull the switch out of the box, exposing the wires.
- Take a photo of the wiring for reference before disconnecting anything.
- Disconnect the wires from the old switch by loosening the terminal screws or pressing the release tabs on push-in connectors.
Step 3: Identify Your Wires
The Eve Light Switch (Matter) requires a neutral wire to operate. In your switch box, you should find:
- Line wire (hot) — typically black, carrying power from the panel
- Load wire — typically black or red, going to the light fixture
- Neutral wire — typically white, bundled in the back of the box
- Ground wire — bare copper or green
If your switch box does not have a neutral wire (common in older homes), the Eve Light Switch cannot be installed. You would need an electrician to run a neutral wire or choose a switch that does not require one.
Step 4: Wire the Eve Light Switch
- Connect the Eve Light Switch's line wire (marked on the switch) to the line (hot) wire from the electrical box using a wire nut.
- Connect the load wire from the switch to the load wire going to your light fixture.
- Connect the neutral wire from the switch to the neutral wire bundle in the box.
- Connect the ground wire from the switch to the ground wire in the box or to the grounding screw on the electrical box.
- Tuck all wires carefully back into the electrical box.
Step 5: Mount the Switch
- Secure the Eve Light Switch to the electrical box with the included screws.
- Attach the included faceplate.
- Turn the breaker back on at the electrical panel.
- Press the switch to verify the light turns on and off.
Step 6: Add to Your Smart Home via the Eve App
- Open the Eve app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the Matter setup code (or HomeKit code) on the switch or included card.
- The app will connect to the switch via Thread or Bluetooth.
- Assign the switch to a room and give it a name, such as "Kitchen Light" or "Hallway Switch."
As a Matter-enabled device, the Eve Light Switch can work with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. You can choose which platform to pair it with during setup.
Step 7: Configure Schedules and Automations
In the Eve app, you can create schedules to automatically turn lights on and off at specific times. You can also set up automations triggered by other smart home events, such as turning the light on when a motion sensor detects movement. The switch supports Thread networking, which provides fast, responsive control and extends the mesh network for other Thread devices in your home.
Tips for Best Performance
- The Eve Light Switch works with most standard light bulbs, including LED, CFL, and incandescent. Check the maximum wattage rating on the switch to ensure compatibility.
- If you have a three-way switch setup (two switches controlling one light), you will need a compatible configuration. Check Eve's compatibility guide for three-way wiring instructions.
- Thread connectivity provides better responsiveness than Bluetooth. Ensure a Thread border router (HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K) is within range.
- The physical switch continues to work normally even if your smart home hub is offline.
