What's in the Box

The GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Smart Dimmer package includes the in-wall smart dimmer switch, a wall plate, wire connectors, and an installation guide. This dimmer replaces a standard single-pole or multi-pole light switch and communicates via Z-Wave Plus technology. It provides smooth, flicker-free dimming for dimmable LED, CFL, halogen, and incandescent bulbs, giving you precise brightness control from your hub or by hand.

Prerequisites

  • A compatible Z-Wave hub such as SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant with a Z-Wave controller, or Wink
  • A single-pole or multi-pole wiring configuration with a neutral wire present in the switch box
  • Dimmable light bulbs — non-dimmable bulbs may flicker or not respond properly
  • Basic electrical tools: screwdriver, wire stripper, non-contact voltage tester, and wire nuts
  • If you're not comfortable with electrical wiring, consult a licensed electrician

Safety First

Always turn off the circuit breaker that controls the light switch before starting installation. Confirm there is no voltage in the switch box using a non-contact voltage tester. Working on live wires is dangerous and can cause serious injury.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Remove the old switch. Take off the existing wall plate and unscrew the switch from the electrical box. Pull it out and disconnect all wires. Take note of which wire is line (incoming power) and which is load (going to the light fixture).
  2. Identify your wires. Locate the line (hot), load, neutral (white bundle), and ground (green or bare copper) wires. If you need to determine line vs. load, briefly turn the breaker on and use a voltage tester, then turn it off again before connecting anything.
  3. Wire the dimmer. Connect the line wire to the terminal marked Line. Attach the load wire to the Load terminal. Join the white neutral wire to the Neutral terminal. Fasten the ground wire to the Ground screw on the dimmer.
  4. For multi-pole setups. If you're replacing a 3-way switch, connect the traveler wire to the Traveler terminal on the dimmer. You'll also need a GE Enbrighten Add-On Switch at the secondary location, which connects via the traveler wire (no Z-Wave radio in the add-on).
  5. Mount the dimmer. Carefully push the wires back into the box and screw the dimmer into place. Attach the included wall plate.
  6. Restore power and test. Turn the breaker back on. Press the top paddle to turn the light on and the bottom paddle to turn it off. Press and hold the paddles to dim up or dim down. The small LED indicator on the switch should illuminate.

Z-Wave Hub Pairing

Set your Z-Wave hub to inclusion mode. On the Enbrighten dimmer, tap the top paddle once. Your hub should detect the device within a few seconds and add it as a dimmer or multilevel switch. Assign a descriptive name and room so it's easy to find in your hub's interface and through voice assistants.

Smart Home Integration Tips

Once paired, the dimmer can be controlled from your hub's app, voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, or through automations. Create scenes such as "Movie Night" that dims the living room to 20 percent, or set a schedule that gradually brightens the lights each morning. The Z-Wave Plus protocol provides excellent range and the dimmer doubles as a Z-Wave signal repeater, helping extend your mesh network to other devices throughout the house.

Quick Troubleshooting

If the dimmer won't power on, verify all wire connections are tight and the breaker is on. If lights flicker at low dim levels, make sure you're using dimmable bulbs and consider adjusting the minimum dim level in your hub's device settings. If the dimmer won't pair, run an exclusion first to clear old Z-Wave data, then retry inclusion. For multi-pole configurations, ensure the add-on switch is wired correctly to the traveler terminal.
